Overview:

Responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy and light-duty vehicles to ensure safe and reliable operation.

  • This role involves identifying mechanical and electrical issues through operator feedback and diagnostic testing, determining the extent of necessary repairs, and implementing effective solutions.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and major repairs on hydraulic systems, electrical systems, drivetrains, engines, transmissions, and fuel systems.
  • Replaces or rebuilds worn or damaged components, including engine parts, carburetors, valves, and ignition systems.
  • Submits purchase requests for required parts and maintains a safe work environment by adhering to established safety standards and procedures. Performs additional duties as assigned.

This position will work on a rotation basis out of the village of Wainwright, reporting to the Operations Manager.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Submit purchase order requests for parts and materials as needed.
  • Maintain a safe work environment by ensuring proper operation of vehicle safety devices and adhering to established safety standards and procedures.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on forklifts, stock selectors, and other vehicles, including hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and drivetrain overhauls.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues, determine the scope of required repairs, and replace or repair defective components such as piston rings, bearings, valves, carburetors, transmissions, fuel injection systems, lighting, and ignition systems.
  • Change and service batteries, including charging and refilling, and perform general maintenance on forklifts and related equipment.
  • Inspect rental equipment upon check-in and check-out, ensuring accurate documentation and reporting of equipment condition.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May supervise up to two part time shop helpers.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED (May substitute experience for education on a year-by-year basis).
  • Equivalent training/ experience, and five years of general experience of which two years must be related experience are required.
  • In general, the work of the Motor Vehicle Mechanic requires rounded training and experience usually acquired through a formal apprenticeship or equivalent.
  • Preferred candidate will have experience with numerous equipment model lines such as Volvo and CAT heavy equipment, Genie Lift, forklifts, skid steer, loaders and excavators, light duty fleet gasoline or diesel trucks.
  • CDL preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Suite of products including, Word, Excel, Access and E-mail business software.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a good attitude and an ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Position requires self-motivation and the ability to work effectively under a minimum of supervision.
  • Must be able to multi-task efficiently, work in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects and have a strong attention for detail.

  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

Projects will be in remote Alaskan locations and will include exposure to extreme temperatures. The work will be outdoors during the Arctic Spring. Anticipate working outdoors in extreme cold, high winds, rain or snow, and occasional mosquito swarms. Work may be performed near moving mechanical parts and/or vibration. Work may be required in areas with high noise levels, fumes or airborne particles, or electrical shock hazards.
