Job Description
Position Overview:
The Substitute Teacher Assistant plays a key role in supporting early childhood classrooms by helping deliver engaging, age-appropriate activities that foster overall child development. Working under the guidance of lead teachers, this position helps maintain a safe, nurturing, and structured environment where young children can learn and grow across social, emotional, physical, and cognitive areas. Responsibilities include assisting with daily routines, preparing materials, and ensuring classroom expectations and program standards are consistently met. Flexibility is essential, as substitutes may be assigned to work at different program sites, including Head Start, Early Head Start, or partner childcare locations. Travel beyond the usual commute will be compensated according to policy.
Required Background and Skills:
Candidates must hold a high school diploma or equivalent. While a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential is not required at hire, it is preferred, and full-time substitutes are expected to earn this certification within two years. Experience working with young children—from infancy through preschool—is beneficial. The role requires clear and professional communication skills to collaborate effectively with coworkers, families, and external partners within the community.
Compensation: Jefferson Co. $16.24 - $19.98 Based on Experience
Benefits: State Health Insurance, State Pension, 100% Tuition covered for IECE or ECE degree, $500 sign-on/$500 Retention bonus, paid sick and annual leave.
