GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Bryan Health Connect (BHC) Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA) serves as the designated physician leader for Bryan Health Connect PHO & ACO operations. A key role of this position is to build strong and collaborative relationships with physicians, advanced care practitioners, payers and large self-funded employers. The BHC VPMA will work in a dyad partnership with the BHC President to balance the clinical needs of BHC with the business sustainability, and to provide clinical strategic and operational oversight.

The VPMA is responsible for Bryan Health Connect’s PHO & ACO provider networks, clinical quality performance, and population health outcomes. The VPMA will lead and be accountable for the strategy, design, development and maintenance of Population Health Management care systems, as well as new clinical integration models of care. The VPMA will champion physician and advanced care practitioner alignment strategies to support Bryan Health Connect’s PHO & ACO’s annual goals and objectives in the value-based healthcare environment.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.
  • *Responsible for maintaining strong, positive relationships with physicians and advanced care practitioners.
  • *Collaborates with other leaders to improve the operations of Bryan Health Connect’s PHO & ACO, including strategic planning, patient satisfaction, physician relations, quality assurance, and other operational improvements.
  • *Leads/supports development of Bryan Health Connect PHO & ACO quality initiatives and other programs to continually improve quality, decrease cost, and provide an outstanding patient experience.
  • *Provides leadership and direction to Bryan Health Connect committees including Clinical Guidelines/Quality Assurance Committee and Sub-Committees; Contracting Committee and Payer Credentialing Committee or payer/employer committee.
  • *Leads the medical management strategic planning process to evaluate utilization, quality, total episode cost of care, patient satisfaction and overall marketplace competitiveness.
  • *Develops and maintains quality, utilization and cost metrics for all areas of medical care delivery including inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory care and post-acute/transitions in care.
  • *Collaboratively works with hospitalists, intensivists, palliative care, SNFist’s, primary care, medical home coaches/coordinators and specialty medical groups to ensure the seamless transitions in care, across the care continuum.
  • *Analyzes aggregate data and reports to physicians, advance care practitioners, payers and employers.
  • *Helps lead the transition from a fee-for-service reimbursement environment to an environment that rewards exceptional clinical care, service and cost effectiveness.
  • *Focuses on models of care that improve population health, enhance reimbursement through value-based contracts, and shared risk opportunities.
  • Leads physicians and advanced care practitioners through the change process from providing care for individuals to providing care for populations, to include assisting with the development and achievement of population health and clinical integration metrics.
  • *Assists in assessing, developing and implementing quality data systems for population health management, engaging physicians and advanced care practitioners through data reporting, scorecards/dashboards and metrics.
  • Incorporates initiatives that will increase patient engagement.
  • Helps develop improved coordination of care delivery across the Bryan Health Connect PHO & ACO population in all settings to improve clinical and financial outcomes.
  • Actively designs and implements innovative physician and advanced care practitioner alignment and clinical integration strategies across the Bryan Health Connect PHO & ACO network to achieve plan goals and objectives.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of a variety of communication styles to include making formal and informal persuasive arguments, making presentations, writing complex correspondence and managing complex relationships over time.
  • Knowledge of strong clinical acumen, with a solid track record in health care quality management, improvement and implementation of evidence-based protocols and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of developing successful physician and advanced care practitioners alignment and clinical integration strategies in large, complex healthcare organizations.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the development of Physician-Hospital Organization (PHO) and Accountable Care Organization (ACO) strategies and implementation is desirable. Viewed as an expert in accountable care delivery systems and network provider development.
  • Knowledge of developing and implementing standardized inpatient and ambulatory practice and referral guidelines.
  • Knowledge of problem-solving skills with the ability to facilitate resolution of conflicts and grievances, handling highly charged problems and situations in a calm and objective manner.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
  • Ability to be an energetic, passionate leader and true champion for healthcare quality, patient safety and continuous process improvement. Ability and desire to integrate CQI principles and tools into clinical inpatient and ambulatory work processes, guidelines, measurement and reporting.
  • Ability to be a visionary and transformational leader, with entrepreneurial business skills, to partner with physicians and administrative leaders to implement a Clinically Integrated PHO network and a value-based Accountable Care Organization delivery network across Nebraska and our service areas.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, including public speaking at educational events, employer events, and large group events.
  • Ability to create new innovative care models and systems to improve quality and cost of care outcomes, as well as enhance the patient care experience.
  • Ability to persuade and negotiate in situations that are controversial and/or sensitive and result in consensus-based decisions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    Minimum of five (5) years of clinical practice experience required. Current Physician Specialty licensure from the State of Nebraska required. Medical administration, medical staff leadership, health system governance and managed care experience preferred. MBA, MHA or related graduate degree preferred. Preferred candidate will still have an active, current medical practice.

    Minimum of five (5) to ten (10) years of progressive leadership experience in a high performance, large multi-specialty group, integrated health care delivery system and/or health plan preferred. Expertise in the development and implementation of population health management and disease management systems, physician and advanced care practitioner alignment and clinical integration strategy development, and experience in risk-based contracting models preferred.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    (DOT) – Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
