About This Position
Job Summary
Performs selected patient care activities. The Mental Health Counselor is a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team and provides support for the patient’s therapeutic treatment plan. Primary responsibilities include conducting groups consistent with the program schedule and patient's needs, observing and recording patient information pertinent to the treatment plan, and reporting this information to the staff Registered Nurse. Must be capable of physically assisting patients, dealing with patient emergencies and able to provide therapeutic support under the direction of nurse. Responsible for accurate and timely documentation.
Essential Functions
- Conducts supportive individual sessions under the supervision of the nurse
- Provides patients with appropriate level of observation as ordered
- Performs vital signs and accurately documents the results in the electronic health records.
- Orients patients to the unit and accurately itemizes patient's belongings upon admission.
- Monitors patients q15 minutes to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
- Assists patients with personal needs when indicated
- Conduct groups and document group notes in the EMR by the end of the shift
- Demonstrates an ability to set priorities and optimally uses work time
- Demonstrates ability to take initiative.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the warning signs of aggressive behavior and utilizes de-escalation techniques as outlined in the Handle with Care training.
- Reports any changes in the patient’s behavior to the nursing staff.
- Performs phone etiquette and answers the phone in a professional manner.
- Demonstrates knowledge of HIPPA law and adheres to it.
- Completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Minimum Education/Certifications
B.S. degree in Counseling, Psychology, or related field.
Minimum Work Experience
1 year experience in behavioral health.
Working Conditions
Requires a full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients and equipment. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 lbs. Requires working under stressful conditions and flexible hours. Involves some discretion independent action and judgment to decide what to do.
