Work Location: 5533 39th Street East, Bradenton, Florida 34203
Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:00am- 3:30pm
This classification is responsible for planning, assigning, and when necessary, performing work to accomplish a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and/or construction activities in the multi-functional operations of the Manatee County highway and/or storm water systems.
Working Conditions
Indoor/Outdoor situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting equipment up to 50 lbs. alone; up to 100 lbs. with assistance.
This is a safety-sensitive position. Employment and continued employment with Manatee County Government is contingent upon passing pre-employment and random substance screenings. An applicant/employee who fails to pass a drug/alcohol screening, shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of three (3) years.Essential Functions

Applies advanced knowledge of maintenance and/or construction principles and practices in safely and efficiently assigning and when necessary performing duties, including operating/using complex automotive, construction, etc., tools and equipment, trenching and shoring techniques, erosion and sedimentation control, pipe placement, etc.
Oversees, and when necessary, performs, work with asphalt, concrete, and other street repair and road building materials; builds catch basins, installs drainage lines, repairs and constructs seawalls; inspects and installs guardrails; performs flagging operations, etc.
Inspects pavement surfaces and/or storm water structures; oversees and when necessary, makes corrective repairs or takes other appropriate action as deemed necessary.
Reads, interprets, and explains blueprints, sketches, and drawings.
Instructs and oversees inmate work crews and all levels of technicians in the performance of assigned duties; performs various personnel-related supervisory duties, i.e., recommending hiring/firing, disciplining, completing employee performance evaluations, etc.
Ensures conformance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, including tort liability.
Oversees the use of, and when necessary, operates complex equipment, i.e., motor graders, rubber tire excavators, track excavators, articulation mowers w/boom extension, tractor trailers/lowboys, etc.
Provides good leadership to staff and when necessary, participates in cleaning ditches, culverts, and cutting brush; preparing surfaces to repair and perform maintenance of pavement, drainage structures and other related highway and or storm water components.
Oversees, and when necessary, performs operator maintenance on vehicles such as checking and adding oil, fuel, water and air; checks brakes; checks and changes tires; cleans and washes vehicles or equipment.
Oversees, utilizes and instructs assigned staff in the safe and efficient use of various hand and power tools such as electric and pneumatic tools and other related equipment in maintaining highways, right-of-ways and storm water structures.
Communicates clearly and effectively and tactfully, orally and in writing; understands, conveys and carries out oral and written instructions.
Performs strenuous work outside in varying and extreme weather conditions; traverses uneven or rugged terrain; safely operates equipment under varying conditions, i.e., rough, uneven, slippery, etc.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, inmate work crews, general public, etc.
Oversees, and when necessary, performs flagging operations ensuring all applicable traffic laws, regulations, etc. are observed.
Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.
High school graduate/equivalent.
Must demonstrate a competent comprehension of when and how to employ Technical Skill Set Levels I, II, III and Senior, as specified on current Public Works Maintenance Technician Career Ladder Matrix.
Minimum of six (6) years public works construction/maintenance work experience (in accordance with area of assignment.)
Minimum of two (2) years lead or supervisory experience.
Valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL), (Class determined by area of assignment), or must obtain within one hundred twenty (120) days of hire.
(Valid Florida CDL permit and written Air Brake test required prior to starting work.)
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; ability to climb and descend equipment, ladders, etc.; ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform other physical movements required for area of assignment; visual acuity and depth perception; ability to hear and identify sounds, i.e., horns, backing equipment, voices, etc.
Ability to read, write and speak English; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions communicated in English.
Skill in computer operations, including pertinent software applications, i.e., MS Word Excel, etc., as well as specialized systems used by the department/division.
