About This Position

Reports to Assistant Chief of Police / Manager of Security. Responsible for providing a safe, secure, and effective environment of care for all of Memorial Hospital/Epworth Campus and properties. This environment is sustained by monitoring Hospital facilities, properties, personnel, and functions to protect Hospital property, patients, visitors, and employees from hazardous conditions, physical harm, trespassing, vandalism, sabotage, fire, theft and other criminal behaviors. Directs visitors, patients, and employees to appropriate location(s) and intervenes to prevent and control patient, visitor, and/or employee disturbances. Makes arrests and summons back-up from local law enforcement. The officer carries a departmental issued handgun while on duty.

Provides Hospital security and police protection by:

  • Monitoring activities of patients, visitors, staff, and others to ensure as much as possible, a safe work environment. Inspecting equipment, doors, windows, and gates to determine that they are secure.
  • Responding to emergency situations throughout the Hospital / Epworth campus such as fire, disturbances, accidents, criminal activity, disasters, bomb searches, etc. and involving external resources/agencies as necessary. Enforcing police/security procedures and maintaining a log of activities during such incidents. Conducting investigations and generating reports as deemed appropriate and/or necessary.
  • Responding to duress alarms, parking lot call boxes, building alarms, door alarms, and patient behavioral health related requests for assistance.
  • Restricting access to visitors and staff in accordance with current Hospital policy and regulating parking in Hospital lots.
  • Summoning external law enforcement agencies as appropriate.
  • Additionally, performs any and all duties of the departments security officer.

Supports Department functions by:

  • Providing escort services for employees, visitors, and patients throughout the Hospital campus.
  • Enforcing parking rules and regulations in Hospital / Epworth campus lots and garages.
  • Limiting access to the facility as appropriate, and providing assistance as requested.
  • Conducting preliminary investigations on incidents occurring on property own, operated or leased by Memorial Hospital and submitting appropriate reports. Reporting accidents, hazards, and other incidents as appropriate.
  • Testifying during hearings, trials, and other legal proceedings, presenting information and accounts on incidents which have occurred on the Hospital's property, as required.

Ensures Hospital safety by:

  • Reporting observed safety hazards and unsafe conditions of property.
  • Initiating emergency response procedures and alarms, as appropriate, throughout the Hospital / Epworth campus, utilizing safety equipment in order to correct or control the incident.
  • Maintaining knowledge and compliance of police/security policies and procedures.
  • Participating in drills, training, and education as deemed appropriate.
  • Completing mandatory in-services and training sessions as required under state statute.
  • Maintaining equipment and property as necessary and/or assigned.

Maintains knowledge, skills, and competence in areas of responsibility by:

  • Attending state mandated in-service training and department meetings; also participating in continuing education and attending conferences as approved.
  • Maintaining professional affiliations as appropriate.
  • Reading current professional literature and journals.

Contributes to the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Department by:

  • Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience:

The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrated leadership potential is preferred. Requires successful completion of state certified 40 hour pre-basic law enforcement class. In addition, the Indiana LETB Tier II (8-week) certification must be obtained within 12 months of appointment.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Requires knowledge of general surveillance techniques and closed circuit television, the "rights" of citizens regarding search, seizure, investigations, and detention.
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of the laws and regulations (i.e., arrest, detention, evidence, safety, etc.), enforcement codes, security systems and procedures that affect the Hospital's security operations; also must have working knowledge of regulatory agency requirements.
  • Requires maintenance of a valid drivers license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact with employees, patients, visitors, other law enforcement agencies, and others; and to complete appropriate paperwork.
  • Requires the computer knowledge necessary to accurately prepare incident reports, forms, and complete other functions and services.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and a commitment to Memorial Health Systems mission and values; and the organizations goal of providing exceptional patient experiences by following Memorials Performance Essentials.
  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to stand for prolonged periods of time, climb stairs, restrain individuals, and be outside in inclement weather, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.

Working Conditions:

  • May be exposed to weather conditions (rain, snow, etc.).
  • May be exposed to potentially dangerous situations.
  • Specialized training and knowledge may reduce the potential for injury when resolving disturbances and responding to alarms.
  • Indiana state law provides the officer with full police powers only when on duty and while on Memorial Hospital campus property.
  • Must commit to a weekend alternative schedule.

Physical Demands:

Requires the physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position.
