JOB TITLE: Safety Supervisor

LOCATION: MRF Tajiguas Landfill

FLSA EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

PREPARED DATE: May 2025

REPORTS TO: General Manager

DIRECT REPORTS: None

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the managing the safety programs required for compliance with CalOSHA/OSHA and workers compensation including establishing standards and specifications for maintaining and reviewing appropriate insurance coverage for the company and contractors at the MRF.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:

  • Champions Safety. Take an active role prioritizing safety for yourself and others to ensure zero accidents and are in total compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Develop, train, and enforce all established safety procedures and protocols.
  • Manages MRF safety supplies (PPE).
  • Oversight of general site/facility cleanliness and ensures daily housekeeping plan is followed in assigned areas and that all areas are cleaned effectively.
  • Inspects all working areas and equipment regularly to identify opportunities for improving the safety of employees.
  • Prepare and maintain all safety records including, accident and near-miss investigations, OSHA logs, permits, safety audits and walk-through reports and other documentation.
  • Recommends and presses for safety improvements in equipment and working conditions and practices.
  • Investigate Accidents. Participate in investigations of accidents and near misses and the identification of root causes and corrective actions. Maintain a database of accurate injury and safety information.
  • Manages, plans, and implements programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses.
  • Develops accident-prevention and loss-control systems and programs for incorporation into operational policies.
  • Manages and coordinates safety activities, through subordinate supervisory personnel, to ensure implementation of safety activities.
  • Responsible for coordinating the medical management of Workers Compensation cases, acquiring return-to-work documentation and coordinating modified duty strategies.
  • Represents the Company with governmental agencies and other organizations concerted with public and employee safety.
  • Conduct employee training sessions on subjects such as hazardous material handling, employee orientation, training on proper use of equipment, and company polices.
  • Comply with regulations while performing work assignments, including but not limited to: Safety, Human Resources, Federal, State and local statutes. Adhere to all policies and procedures as specified in company manuals and as directed in the employee handbook.

QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Advanced understanding of Safety/CalOSHA/OSHA regulations and programs.
  • Problem-Solving Skills. Must possess excellent hazard recognition skills, working with different partners to address the challenges and problems ensuring accurate, safe, and efficient solutions.
  • Ability to teach supervisors, managers and other leaders about health and safety standards.
  • Presenting safety training sessions to personnel.
  • Must be able to read and speak well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, instructions, signals, and safety training.
  • Prefer familiarity with Baling Equipment - Safety Requirements for Installation, Maintenance, and Operation.
  • Must be able to regularly work near or around high-powered magnets, which prohibits people with pacemakers from being near or around them.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lb. unassisted at times. Safely operate broom, shovel, rake, screwdriver, pliers and other non-mechanical hand tools
  • Ability to analyze health and safety data.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Must be able to work with high-level direction and be an independent self-starter.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively and professionally.
  • Above average organizational skills and the ability to prioritize departmental functions in order to meet due dates and deadlines.
  • Advanced experience in Word, Excel, Gmail Suites, including functional ability to utilize software knowledge for automated processes and data collection
  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or seven plus years of progressive high-level equivalent training in recycling production, solid waste and/or high-speed/production-based manufacturing
  • Valid Driver’s License.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree, or in lieu of degree, High School Diploma or GED.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Position requires excellent verbal and writes English communication skills including ability to read, comprehend, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Basic Spanish communication skills desired.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATIONS: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
