Position Title: Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET)
Position Purpose: We are seeking a skilled Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) to provide biomedical equipment maintenance and repair services in support of the Defense Health Agency (DHA) at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD). The BMET will install, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, maintain, and document a wide variety of medical, laboratory, and dental equipment used in patient diagnosis, treatment, and research.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring medical equipment remains safe, reliable, and compliant with Department of Defense (DoD), Joint Commission, OSHA, and manufacturer standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, functional testing, calibration, troubleshooting, and corrective repairs on medical, laboratory, and dental equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and electronic malfunctions using appropriate testing equipment and manufacturer documentation.
- Install, configure, test, and verify operational readiness of new biomedical equipment.
- Perform equipment overhauls, upgrades, modifications, and component replacements as required.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, service documentation, and equipment histories within government database systems.
- Ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications, Joint Commission standards, OSHA requirements, DHA policies, and facility safety procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff meetings, safety briefings, training sessions, and departmental meetings.
- Collaborate with clinical staff, department leadership, equipment vendors, and other hospital services to resolve equipment issues.
- Maintain electronic and paper documentation supporting biomedical equipment maintenance activities.
- Remain current on new biomedical technologies, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide professional customer service while supporting clinical operations throughout NMCSD and affiliated Branch Medical Clinics as directed.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Associate degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field OR equivalent military biomedical equipment training and experience.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on biomedical equipment in a hospital or clinical setting.
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems used in medical equipment.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a favorable Tier 1 Background Investigation and Common Access Card (CAC).
- Must successfully complete all required government orientation and training, including HIPAA, OPSEC, and SHARP, prior to performing duties.
Preferred:
- Experience supporting military treatment facilities (MTFs), VA medical centers, or large hospital systems.
- Familiarity with Joint Commission standards and medical equipment accreditation requirements.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Knowledge of medical device risk management and lifecycle management.
Working Conditions and Environment
This position is on-site in a medical facility. Driving may be required.
Physical Requirements
The position requires repetitive motion, such as standing, walking, sitting and bending. Light lifting, up to 20 pounds, may be required.
