About Us

The Occupational Health Medical Director provides strategic, clinical, and administrative leadership for the institution’s Occupational Health Services program within a research-intensive medical school. The Medical Director is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and regulatory compliance of faculty, staff, students, and research personnel across clinical, laboratory, and academic environments. This role integrates occupational health services with institutional research, education, and safety programs, and supports a culture of workplace health and safety aligned with regulatory standards and academic excellence.



POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical Oversight

  • Direct and oversee occupational health clinical services, including pre-placement evaluations, medical surveillance, immunization programs, and exposure management
  • Provide clinical consultation for work-related injuries, illnesses, and complex occupational or environmental health cases
  • Oversee return-to-work and fitness-for-duty evaluations
  • Ensure evidence-based clinical protocols and high standards of care

Research and Academic Engagement

  • Collaborate with faculty and research leadership to support occupational and environmental health research initiatives
  • Participate in the development and oversight of research protocols involving occupational risks, including biological, chemical, and radiological hazards
  • Contribute to teaching and training programs for faculty, staff, students, and postdocs
  • Support grant development and scholarly activity related to occupational health

Regulatory Compliance and Safety

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, CDC, NIH, IACUC and IAS and applicable public health guidelines

  • Partner with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), IACUC and IAS and other oversight bodies
  • Oversee occupational health components of laboratory safety, animal research programs, and exposure control plans
  • Lead and support response to workplace exposures, outbreaks, or public health emergencies

Program Administration

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate occupational health policies, procedures, and programs
  • Monitor program performance through quality improvement initiatives and data-driven metrics
  • Develop strategic plans aligned with institutional priorities

Institutional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Human Resources on employee health policies, disability management, and leave programs
  • Work with Risk Management and Legal Affairs on compliance and incident response
  • Serve as a key advisor to institutional leadership on occupational health risks and mitigation strategies
  • Coordinate with affiliated hospitals and clinical partners as applicable

Work Environment:

Combination of office, clinical, and research/laboratory environments

  • May require occasional on-call availability for urgent occupational health or exposure incidents

Academic Appointment (if applicable):

  • Eligible for faculty appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level, commensurate with qualifications and experience


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
  • Board certification in Occupational Medicine, Preventive Medicine, or a closely related specialty
  • Current, valid, and unrestricted medical license (or eligibility) in the state of employment
  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in occupational health or related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of occupational health regulations and compliance standards
