Job Description

Reports to the Director of Professional Coding (BMG) and works closely with BMG Management, providers, and Centralized Coders. Responsible for conducting ongoing coding and documentation audits at all BMG physician office locations. Provides documentation to support the audit results. Assists in providing education and training to all BMG Coders and providers regarding current regulations/requirements for compliant documentation and coding of patient encounters.

Maintains responsibility for coding audits and documentation at all BMG physician locations by:

  • Developing and maintaining an audit process of the documentation and coding of the patient charts on an appropriate sample basis.
  • Developing and maintaining, in conjunction with BMG Management and the Physician Management Committee a method to effectively discuss the results of the documentation and coding audits with the providers at BMG.
  • Developing, in conjunction with the Corporate Compliance Officer and external consultants, an educational program that addresses the need of the physicians and staff at BMG.
  • Providing education and training to all BMG physicians and staff regarding the current regulations for documentation and coding of patient encounters.
  • Conducting ongoing coding and documentation audits at all BMG Physician offices.

Supports the BMG/BHS management team by:

  • Providing periodic reports to the Management Committee and BMG Compliance Committee on documentation and coding audits.
  • Providing appropriate communication on review audits on a timely basis to BMG physicians and providing documentation to support the conclusions reached.
  • Assisting the Supervisor, Medical Records in coordinating special projects and compliance audits at BMG locations.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Completing other job related duties and assignments as directed.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma; an Associate's Degree in Business, Health Information Technology, or related field from an accredited school is preferred. Requires three to five years progressively responsible coding experience, including auditing of E/M and surgical codes. A coding certification as a CPC (Certified Professional Coder) or CCS-P (Certified Coding Specialist - Physician Office) is required.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Requires an in-depth knowledge of the documentation and coding requirements for providers.
  • Demonstrates well developed organizational, planning and technical abilities to effectively develop a recurring documentation and coding review process.
  • Demonstrates good communication and teaching skills, both verbal and written, to present sensitive information to management and to physicians.
  • Demonstrates necessary interpersonal skills to effectively interact with a diverse group of physicians and employees.
  • Requires adequate computer skills to effectively utilize health information systems including practice management software and electronic health records.
  • Demonstrates an ability to plan and coordinate routine visits to multiple office locations.

Working Conditions

  • Works in an office environment.
  • Frequent travel to multiple locations to perform essential functions of the position.
