The Staff Accountant will support daily accounting operations by maintaining accurate financial records, managing financial reconciliations, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal policies.
- Maintain the general ledger, prepare journal entries, and support accurate financial recordkeeping.
- Assist with monthly and year-end closing activities, including account analysis and reporting preparation.
- Perform bank and account reconciliations, including operating accounts and client trust accounts.
- Support billing processes by reviewing invoices, tracking expenses, and assisting with client account management.
- Monitor accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, including collection tracking and payment follow-up.
- Ensure compliance with trust accounting requirements, financial regulations, and internal procedures.
- Prepare financial reports, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and operational summaries.
- Track client retainers and ensure proper allocation and management of client funds.
- Analyze financial data, investigate discrepancies, and provide recommendations for resolution.
- Assist with external audits, tax preparation activities, and financial documentation requests.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of sensitive financial and client information.
- Collaborate with attorneys, billing teams, leadership, and other departments to support financial operations.
The ideal candidate is an accounting professional with experience managing financial processes, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work accurately in a professional services environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- 2–4 years of accounting experience, ideally within a law firm, professional services organization, or similar environment.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, including GAAP standards.
- Experience with general ledger management, reconciliations, billing processes, and financial reporting.
- Familiarity with legal billing systems and trust accounting practices preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software platforms.
- Experience with legal or accounting systems such as Clio, Elite, Aderant, or QuickBooks is a plus.
- CPA certification or progress toward certification is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to handle confidential financial and client information with discretion.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with attorneys, finance teams, and business stakeholders.
