This role sits at the intersection of clinical documentation and healthcare revenue integrity, ensuring that complex outpatient encounters—particularly within cancer care and infusion services—are accurately translated into standardized medical codes. You will review detailed medical records, assign ICD-10, CPT, and modifier codes, and ensure that documentation supports compliant billing and appropriate reimbursement. Working in a fast-paced hospital environment, you will contribute directly to data accuracy, financial performance, and regulatory compliance. The role requires strong attention to detail, independence, and the ability to navigate complex clinical scenarios. You will collaborate with physicians and administrative teams to clarify documentation and improve coding precision. It is a critical position supporting both patient care continuity and the operational health of the organization.
- Review and interpret hospital medical records to identify diagnoses, procedures, and services for outpatient encounters, ensuring accurate assignment of ICD-10, CPT, and modifier codes, particularly for moderately complex patient classes such as ED, observation, and same-day care.
- Ensure timely and accurate coding, abstraction, and charging of assigned accounts in alignment with hospital and regulatory guidelines.
- Maintain coding quality and compliance by applying current coding standards and participating in ongoing education, audits, and coding updates.
- Collaborate with physicians and healthcare staff to obtain missing or unclear clinical documentation needed for precise coding assignments.
- Support the integrity of billing processes by ensuring clean claim submission and resolving documentation discrepancies.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Active coding certification from AHIMA or AAPC is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of hospital coding experience.
- Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and medical terminology, with the ability to accurately code moderately complex inpatient and outpatient cases.
- Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and healthcare documentation standards.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining high accuracy in a detail-intensive, interruption-prone environment.
- Strong communication, prioritization, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage workload under pressure.
- Preferred: completion of a Health Information Technology (HIT) program or formal medical coding training.
