Expert/Principal Software Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Expert/Principal Software Engineer based in Canada.

This role offers the opportunity to design and build foundational software powering large-scale networking environments.
You will contribute to the evolution of a high-performance Linux-based operating system used in critical data center infrastructures.
The position requires deep software engineering expertise, strong problem-solving abilities, and ownership from design through deployment.
You will collaborate with experienced engineers, technical teams, and customers to deliver reliable and scalable solutions.

Accountabilities:

As an Expert/Principal Software Engineer, you will take ownership of complex software development initiatives, contributing across architecture, implementation, testing, debugging, and customer-facing problem resolution. You will work on critical infrastructure software while helping improve engineering practices and supporting the growth of technical teams.

  • Design, develop, and maintain system software solutions for advanced networking infrastructure.
  • Create functional and technical specifications, design documents, test plans, and high-quality implementations.
  • Develop software components using C, C++, and Python within large-scale Linux-based environments.
  • Build and maintain APIs, drivers, and software interfaces for managing hardware devices and system resources.
  • Implement automated testing solutions, analyze test results, and resolve software defects.
  • Debug complex issues across software, hardware interactions, and customer environments.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to develop solutions for networking infrastructure, including AI-driven networking environments.
  • Partner with support and testing teams to investigate issues and deliver reliable fixes and updates.
  • Work with open-source technologies, libraries, and tools to enhance software capabilities.
  • Review technical designs and code contributions from other engineers.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to improving development processes and technical standards.
  • Drive project planning, task estimation, progress tracking, and delivery execution.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in software engineering, systems development, and large-scale infrastructure solutions. You should have strong technical depth, the ability to independently solve complex problems, and experience working across software and hardware environments.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience with 12+ years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree with 10+ years; or a Ph.D. with 7+ years.
  • Strong programming experience with C, C++, and Python.
  • Extensive experience developing software for Linux-based systems.
  • Hands-on experience working with open-source software and contributing to or modifying existing solutions.
  • Experience developing Linux drivers, APIs, or software interfaces for hardware and system resources.
  • Knowledge of hardware programming, ASICs, or custom hardware environments.
  • Experience debugging complex software systems and troubleshooting production issues.
  • Understanding of distributed systems concepts, including messaging, signaling, databases, and command-line interfaces.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering principles, architecture, and development best practices.
  • Ability to independently design and implement solutions while collaborating effectively within engineering teams.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to mentor other engineers.
  • Experience with networking concepts, including Layer 2/Layer 3 technologies and switching architectures, is a plus.
