Position Title: Facilities and Grounds Maintenance Worker
Reports to: Operations Manager
Location: Vieques, PR
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary: Aldevra is currently seeking a qualified Facilities and Grounds Maintenance Worker to support the United States Fish & Wildlife Services (USFWS) in Vieques, PR. We are looking for someone who brings a positive attitude, strong attention to detail, clear communication, and a willingness to jump in where needed. This position is contingent upon contract award.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Assist the refuge in construction, rehabilitation, and preventive maintenance projects.
- Stack, sort, or arrange supplies and materials onto pallets as directed; and load, unload, and move heavy boxes, bulky supplies, and materials to and from trucks, loading platforms, packing lines, etc., by hand or with the use of hand trucks and dollies.
- Washing buildings using a high-pressure sprayer.
- Basic carpentry, plumbing, and garbage pickup at public areas.
- Conduct routine inspections and upkeep of refuge buildings and facilities (e.g., office, maintenance building, quarter, parking, pavilion, signage, fences).
- Operate the USFWS tractors, vehicles, other small machinery, tools, and power equipment.
- Servicing equipment by checking fluids, lubricating, and performing safety checks; performing minor repairs; servicing, checking, and fueling equipment and attachments before operation and performing daily preventative maintenance.
- Keep written maintenance records for all equipment operated.
- Use of common hand tools and simple power equipment such as hatchets, hand saws, clippers, buffers, grinders, screwdrivers, weed trimmers, low-pressure sprayers, powered push lawn mowers, riding mowers, powered pavement vacuums, and wet vacuums or steam cleaners.
- Cut trees, using axes or chainsaws.
- May conduct disking, chopping, mowing, digging, loading, and leveling to a rough grade for ditch cleaning, creating and maintaining trails, firebreaks, roads, parking lots, and other facilities.
- Conduct regular safety checks to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Maintain proper storage and handling of maintenance supplies, tools, and chemicals.
- Respond promptly to emergency maintenance requests and incidents within the facilities and on the refuge.
- Assist with event setup and take down within the office and refuge areas.
- Provide support for special projects assigned by supervisors, including support at other Caribbean refuges facilities if requested.
- All other duties as assigned.

Mental and Physical Requirements:
This position is based in an office environment, primarily involving computer work, meetings, and collaboration with team members.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, reach, and work on uneven terrain, slopes, trails, and outdoor work sites for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull tools, equipment, supplies, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally move items weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance or mechanical aids.
- Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, chainsaws, tractors, trucks, trailers, mowers, and other maintenance equipment.
- Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, and shoulder movements required to operate tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Ability to safely climb ladders and work at varying heights while performing facility maintenance and repairs.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, wind, and direct sunlight, and tolerate exposure to dust, dirt, noise, vibration, fumes, fuels, lubricants, chemicals, insects, and other environmental conditions associated with maintenance work.
- Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment while maintaining situational awareness and following established safety procedures.
- Ability to understand, follow, and apply written and verbal instructions, policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Ability to recognize hazardous conditions, exercise sound judgment, and respond appropriately to emergencies and changing work conditions.
- Ability to learn and maintain required certifications, safely use personal protective equipment (PPE), and comply with all applicable health, safety, environmental, and agency regulations.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required
- 2+ years of maintenance experience
- Person must have experience operating a variety of gasoline or diesel-powered tractors, trucks and trailers.
- Required to obtain the USFWS Defensive Driving and other required Service’s certifications to operate and manage equipment.
- Must possess a commercial driver’s license (CDL).
- Basic knowledge and skills in electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, auto mechanics and groundskeeping systems.
- Must be able to frequently lift and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally over 50 pounds with assistance.
- The ability to work is performed in all types of weather.
- Needs to be willing to respond to emergencies as requested by the Refuge Manager.
- Valid Real-ID state-issued driver's license
- Excellent verbal communication skills and telephone manner
- Excellent and accurate written communication
- Familiarity with Windows operating systems; online calendars and cloud systems; intermediate to advanced skills Microsoft office products required
- Excellent attention to detail; accurate data entry
