Position Information


The Director of Development is a seasoned, high-performing major-gift professional who grows philanthropic support and secures gifts of at least $50,000 for School of Medicine priorities at the University of California, Riverside. Reporting to the Executive Director of Development—School of Medicine, the Director independently builds and manages a balanced portfolio of major-gift prospects, actively identifying and qualifying new donors while developing and executing cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies that create meaningful gift experiences. The Director is expected to securegifts of significant size and impact, including planned, blended, and other complex gifts. The Director maintains a consistent rhythm of direct donor engagement, partners with faculty and unit leaders to shape compelling philanthropic opportunities and prepare them for donor interactions, and collaborates with central Development and Alumni Engagement (DAE) colleagues to achieve fundraising goals. Performance is assessed against annual fundraising productivity expectations.The full salary range for the Director of Development, School of Medicine is $106,200.00- $202,200.00 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $125,000.00 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time.  Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements. Please note: this is a three-year, renewable contract position which includes the same employee benefits afforded career employees.

Minimum Requirements
Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Ability to make persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.
Very strong skills in maintaining confidentiality.
Advanced working knowledge of all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and/or throughout higher education/healthcare generally. Advanced working of the location, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
Advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
Advanced organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution, and strong project management skills.
Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
Ability to build a donor pipeline, independently plan and manage portfolio activity to meet annual expectations for visits, qualifications, solicitations, and gift production.
Proficiency with CRM systems (Salesforce preferred) and standard productivity software; maintains timely, accurate data entry of contact reports and prospect plans.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a matrix, centralized-decentralized development model.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to conceptualize, design, and lead a unit development program, setting strategy and goals in partnership with the dean or unit head.
