Heavy-Duty Automotive Mechanic
Facility & Bus Shelter Maintenance Technician
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Type: Fleet Maintenance / Facility Maintenance
Schedule: Day Shift with occasional after-hours or emergency maintenance as needed
Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable, experienced Heavy-Duty Automotive Mechanic who can also support facility maintenance and bus shelter maintenance. This position is responsible for keeping our bus fleet safe, reliable, and ready for service while assisting with routine upkeep of company facilities, shops, parking areas, and passenger bus shelters.
The ideal candidate is a well-rounded technician who is comfortable working on gasoline-powered buses, vans, and other fleet vehicles and is willing to handle a variety of hands-on maintenance responsibilities outside of the shop.
Safety, preventive maintenance, vehicle availability, and quality workmanship are the primary priorities of this position.
Primary Responsibilities
Fleet & Bus Maintenance
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy-duty gasoline-powered buses, cutaway buses, and para-transit vans.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, starting, charging, cooling, fuel, steering, suspension, and braking system concerns.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance inspections and services.
  • Complete engine, transmission, brake, suspension, steering, HVAC, and electrical repairs within the technician's capabilities.
  • Diagnose check-engine lights and vehicle fault codes using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
  • Inspect vehicles for safety and DOT-related deficiencies.
  • Perform brake inspections and repairs, including pads, rotors, calipers, hydraulic components, and related systems.
  • Perform oil changes, fluid services, filters, belts, hoses, batteries, bulbs, and other routine maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot vehicle HVAC and passenger climate-control concerns.
  • Identify developing mechanical problems before they result in vehicle breakdowns.
  • Respond to roadside or field maintenance needs when required.
  • Assist with vehicle recovery and return-to-service activities.
  • Maintain accurate work orders, inspection records, parts usage, and repair documentation.
  • Ensure vehicles are repaired properly before being returned to service.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance shop.
Facility Maintenance
The position will also assist with routine facility and property upkeep, including:
  • Replacing light fixtures, bulbs, switches, and other basic electrical components.
  • Minor cosmetic repairs.
  • Furniture and equipment assembly.
  • Basic shop equipment maintenance.
  • Pressure washing and general exterior cleanup.
  • Minor fence, gate, and parking-area repairs.
  • Maintaining signs and facility markings.
  • Identifying facility safety hazards and coordinating repairs when specialized contractors are required.
  • Supporting general shop and property organization.
This position is not expected to perform specialized licensed electrical, HVAC, plumbing, or construction work that requires a licensed contractor.
Bus Shelter Maintenance
The technician will perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs of passenger bus shelters and related transit infrastructure, including:
  • Inspecting shelters for damage, deterioration, and safety concerns.
  • Replacing damaged benches, panels, signs, hardware, and other components.
  • Tightening or replacing bolts, anchors, brackets, and fasteners.
  • Minor structural and cosmetic repairs.
  • Cleaning shelters and surrounding areas.
  • Pressure washing when necessary.
  • Removing debris and maintaining passenger areas.
  • Replacing route information, signage, and decals.
  • Touch-up painting and corrosion prevention.
  • Reporting vandalism or significant structural damage.
  • Ensuring shelters remain safe, clean, functional, and presentable for passengers.
Required Qualifications
  • Previous experience as an automotive, truck, fleet, transit, or bus mechanic.
  • Strong experience with gasoline engines and gasoline-powered commercial vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle electrical and electronic diagnostic systems.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance and general mechanical repairs independently.
  • Ability to properly use scan tools, diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and shop equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand repair procedures, wiring diagrams, service information, and maintenance schedules.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple maintenance priorities.
  • Willingness to perform both vehicle and facility-related maintenance.
  • Strong attention to safety and workmanship.
  • Ability to document completed repairs accurately.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience maintaining transit buses, shuttle buses, school buses, cutaway buses, or commercial passenger vehicles.
  • Experience with Ford, Chevrolet/GM, or other commercial gasoline platforms.
  • ASE certifications.
  • CDL with Passenger endorsement or ability to obtain one.
  • DOT inspection experience.
  • Experience with fleet maintenance software or electronic work-order systems.
  • Basic welding or fabrication experience.
  • Experience maintaining commercial facilities or transit infrastructure.
Physical Requirements
Candidate must be able to:
  • Lift and carry approximately 50–75 pounds when necessary.
  • Work underneath, inside, and around buses and commercial vehicles.
  • Bend, kneel, climb, reach, and work from ladders.
  • Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, pressure washers, and related maintenance equipment.
  • Travel locally between facilities, vehicle locations, and bus shelters as required.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work. This position is more than repairing vehicles after they break down. The technician will play an important role in preventing breakdowns, identifying safety concerns early, maintaining clean and professional facilities, and ensuring that passenger shelters remain safe and presentable.
The successful candidate will be:
  • Dependable
  • Safety focused
  • Mechanically skilled
  • Self-motivated
  • Organized
  • Comfortable working independently
  • Willing to handle different types of maintenance work
  • Focused on preventive maintenance rather than reactive repairs
Compensation
Competitive hourly compensation based on experience, certifications, and qualifications.
Additional compensation may be considered for candidates with ASE certifications, CDL qualifications, extensive bus experience, or advanced diagnostic capabilities.
