Job Description

About Company

At the heart of what we are, we are a small company that specializes in manufacturing personal care products. While we are much bigger now than what we were 20 years ago or even 5 years ago, our company was built on a belief that being small meant that we had to be faster than our competition, smarter, braver and of course, nicer. We knew that in order to make it, we had to produce products that our customers needed, in time, priced right, and with the highest quality. We knew innovation meant pushing the envelope on design and thinking. Most importantly, we knew that developing relationships meant building a reputation for coming through on promises and standing behind our product. That is who we are today and how we operate every day.

Position Summary

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for supporting the development, validation, and optimization of packaging components and documentation for both new product launches and ongoing production. Reporting to the Senior Technical Services Engineer Lead, this role plays a critical part in evaluating packaging performance, supporting quality investigations, and ensuring all packaging formats meet manufacturability, quality, and regulatory expectations.

The Packaging Engineer partners closely with Project Services to co-develop and maintain Finished Goods assembly instructions, ensuring that packaging steps, tooling requirements, and inspection criteria are technically accurate and production-ready. As the primary technical owner for packaging component evaluation, format compatibility, and documentation accuracy during product commercialization, this role plays a key function in the success of Technical Services and cross-functional launch execution.

Responsibilities and Essential Duties

  • Maintain clear tracking of all projects, including updating internal team trackers and being ready to provide updates to Launch Managers on various ongoing projects. Observe production during packaging trials and startup runs to provide packaging-specific input or recommendations; escalate risks or inconsistencies as needed.
  • Conduct packaging performance tests, including drop tests, vibration tests, seal integrity evaluations, and other in-process checks.
  • Maintain and organize packaging specifications, ensuring they are up to date, clearly defined, and compliant with component requirements.
  • Adhere to Good Documentation Practices (GDP) when creating, revising, or managing packaging-related documents, drawings, or test records.
  • Provide input on packaging risk assessments and suggest improvements to enhance packaging consistency or reduce line impact.
  • Participate in packaging-related quality investigations and assist in identifying root causes related to material, fit, or assembly issues.
  • Support corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) by gathering data, coordinating testing, and helping ensure proper documentation of packaging improvements.
  • Collaborate with Technical Services Engineers, Quality, Manufacturing, and Project Managers to ensure that packaging requirements are met during trial and launch phases.
  • Work closely with component suppliers or Packaging Development to resolve performance or specification-related concerns.
  • Assist in evaluating packaging changes for potential risk to manufacturability or product quality.

Technical Skills Required

  • Knowledge of primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging materials and formats used in cosmetic, OTC, or related manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with packaging-related test methods (e.g., seal integrity, drop testing, vacuum testing).
  • Strong attention to detail in managing and maintaining technical documentation.
  • Ability to interpret packaging drawings, specifications, and physical test results.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); experience with ERP systems and document control platforms preferred

Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging, Mechanical, Industrial, or related Engineering field; or a minimum of 5 years of directly relevant experience in manufacturing or technical operations, in lieu of a degree.
  • 0-2 years of experience in packaging engineering or technical support within a manufacturing environment (cosmetics, OTC, pharmaceutical, food, or similar).
  • Experience supporting documentation accuracy, packaging validations, and performance testing.
  • Familiarity with GMP, GDP, and quality systems (CAPA, deviations, etc.).

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to sit, balance, climb, stand, bend, squat, squeeze, kneel, turn, crouch, and stop repeatedly.
  • Physically able to lift 25 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Frequent exposure to varying temperatures, loud noises, heavy machinery, fumes, airborne particles, electrical, chemicals, and moving parts.
  • Prolonged use of computer screen.
