The City of Vandalia seeks to recruit and immediately employ full-time fire service professionals who are energetic and ready to learn. Position Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

45% 1. Responds to fire and EMS emergencies and assists with controlling and extinguishing fires; operates fire engine, ladders, pumps, generators, and other related equipment; utilizes axe, shovel, pry bar, and various other hand tools to assist in firefighting operations; oversees and carries out all needed pre hospital patient care up to the E.M.T. Paramedic level administering life support and providing other assistance as required; determines nature and extent of illness or injury, establishes priority for emergency and renders rescue and emergency care to include life support or intensive care techniques.

20% 2. Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities; presents programs to the community on safety, medical, and fire prevention topics; performs and participates in required fire and EMS training; performs alarm investigations.

15% 3. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities; ensures proper operation of life support equipment, instruments and supplies; inventories and restocks medical supplies; inspects, cleans, and performs minor maintenance on vehicles; performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; maintains cleanliness and orderliness of E.M.S. units and squad bays; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment; performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.

10% 4. Prepares and submits run reports (e.g., record of treatment, nature of problem, victim identification information); communicates with victim, victim's families, law officers, fire fighters, M.D.s, and general public.

5. Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.

6. Maintains required licensure or certification, if any.

7. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable PERRP safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

8. Demonstrates regular, predictable and punctual attendance.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

5% 1. Performs other duties as assigned.

5% 2. Career members at designated fire stations may serve as shift commander and may assist with supervising assigned part-time fire division personnel (e.g., schedules and assigns tasks; interviews job applicants; recommends the hiring of job applicants; evaluates performance; attends or participates in meetings in which policy questions are reviewed or discussed; develops and implements policy; recommends policy changes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Qualifications -

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED); one (1) or more years' experience performing firefighting duties (full-time or Part-time); or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of Firefighter Level 2 Certification; Paramedic Certification; Fire Safety Inspector Certification; CPR certification; must possess a valid State of Ohio driver's license and must remain insurable under the City's vehicle insurance plan.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED: The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive.

Fire trucks, truck pumps, aerial and ground ladders, pumps, fire hydrants, fire hoses, generators, power saws, fans, breathing packs, cutters, axes, grinders, pike poles, other miscellaneous hand tools, motor vehicle, calculator, computer, mobile phone, fax machine, copier, scanner, telephone, and other standard modern business office equipment.

Knowledge of: - office practices and procedures; *City/department goals and objectives; *City/department policies and procedures; two-way radio operations; *workplace safety practices and procedures; *personnel rules and regulations; computer software; community resources and services; public relations; records management; project management; government structure and process; state, federal, and local laws and/or regulations; training and development; local geographical area; English grammar and spelling; fire suppression and prevention techniques; fire/emergency rescue techniques; fire investigation and arson detection techniques; fire prevention laws, codes, rules and regulations. Skill in: - fire equipment operation; rescue equipment; word processing; computer operation; use of modern office equipment; moto vehicle operation. Ability to: - carry out instructions in written, oral, or picture form; interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form; deal with problems involving several variables within familiar context; define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; exercise independent judgement and discretion; understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, or regulations to specific situations; add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages; copy records precisely without error; complete routine forms; prepare routine correspondence; compile and prepare reports; respond to routine inquiries from public and/or officials; communicate effectively; train or instruct others; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; handle sensitive inquiries from and contacts with officials and general public; develop and maintain effective working relationships; resolve complaints; travel to and gain access to work site; lift, position, and move disabled or bedridden clients/patients; operate heavy equipment, rescue tools, ladders, and hand tools; work in adverse weather conditions. Physical Requirements:

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); works in the vicinity of dockboards (bridge plates); works in an area in which the means of egress is or can be obstructed; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms (e.g., manlifts, fire trucks, etc.); is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; is exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db (e.g., from equipment, from sirens, etc.); is exposed to possible injury from radiation; is exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, or air contaminants; is exposed to possible injury from hazardous waste; is exposed to possible injury due to unclean or unsanitary conditions; is exposed to possible injury as a result of electrical shock; is exposed to possible injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines; is exposed to possible injury from explosions (e.g., chainsaws hose roller, fire trucks, aerial platform/ladder, hose washer, fire pumps, etc.); is exposed to possible injury as a result of falling from high places; uses or works in proximity to the use of firearms; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; has exposure to potentially vicious animals; has exposure to life threatening situations (i.e., fire, etc.); has exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; has exposure to extreme non-weather related heat or cold and hazardous driving conditions; has exposure to shaking objects or surfaces; has exposure to second-hand smoke; this is considered heavy work and the employee must demonstrate the ability to perform the physical demands required of the position in accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor's physical demands strength ratings.

In cases of emergency, unpredictable situations, and/or department needs, may be required to lift, push, pull, and/or carry objects heavier than D.O.L. strength ratings recommend.
