Department Overview

The OHSU Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) is seeking a full-time physician to join our team to be staffed in the emergency department at Hillsboro Medical Center.

Hillsboro Medical Center is a classical community emergency department, 37,000 visits annually, on the west side of Portland/Hillsboro in an agricultural based region. The department sees a wide variety of pathology and serves a large Latino and pediatric population. The hospital is a stroke center and also has a cardiac catheterization lab. The hospital staff is undergoing major transformation and many OHSU Marquam Hill departments are now providing specialty services at HMC. Unlike most community Emergency Departments, there is an academic blend to HMC. Upper level emergency medicine, internal medicine, and family medicine residents rotate through the ED. There are two daily mid-level shifts staffed by 4 FT and 5 PT Advanced Practice Providers. The physician group has 9 FT physicians and 5 PT physicians and multiple physicians share time at OHSU Marquam Hill (academic ED residency site), Adventist Health Portland (academic student site) and HMC. There are five daily shifts and the shift length averages 8-hours.

In addition, a 9-bed observation unit opened on February 1, 2023. This Unit is managed by the OHSU Department of Emergency Medicine and provides ongoing care to our Emergency Department patients with an anticipated length of stay of 8-48 hours. We care for medical and surgical patients ages 18 and older. Patients receive care from our interdisciplinary team, including Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Technicians, and Physicians. A full spectrum of support services and specialty clinical services are available to all OHSU patients. The team assesses the appropriateness and clinical necessity of services on an ongoing basis and initiates referrals. The ED attending physicians are available 24/7 to provide support. Leadership includes a physician Unit Medical Director and APP Unit Assistant Medical Director. The advanced practice provider group has 6.5FTE staffing three daily shifts, and the length averages 8-hours.

The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.

The duties of this position are in support of the missions, goals and objectives of OHSU and the School of Medicine.
