Technical Leader II – Performance Demonstration Applications
Job Summary
Conducts and leads research, development, and performance demonstration (PD) activities in complex, high impact technical and scientific fields related to nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and inspection reliability. This role combines applied R&D, technical program leadership, and administration of performance demonstration programs, ensuring technical rigor, regulatory alignment, and practical value to utility and industry stakeholders.
Job Description
Conducts, manages, and applies research in complex, high impact technical or scientific fields, with a strong emphasis on nondestructive evaluation methods, performance demonstration, and inspection qualification programs. Leads technical work that advances industry practice while ensuring consistency with applicable codes, standards, and member needs.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Research
• Independently leads applied research and development activities in advanced NDE technologies and inspection performance, with minimal supervision.
• Addresses highly specialized technical problems where cause and effect relationships are difficult to establish and limited precedent exists, requiring creative, analytical, and imaginative problem solving.
• Maintains deep familiarity with the state of practice, emerging technologies, and technical challenges within assigned research and performance demonstration areas.
• Develops technical guidance, procedures, and evaluation methodologies supporting inspection qualification and performance demonstration programs.
Performance Demonstration Administration
• Supports and administers performance demonstration programs, including test development, specimen design input, data review, and documentation of results.
• Ensures performance demonstration activities align with applicable industry codes, standards, and program requirements.
• Coordinates technical activities related to examiner, procedure, and equipment qualification and requalification.
• Interfaces with utilities, vendors, laboratories, and other stakeholders to ensure consistent interpretation and application of performance demonstration requirements.
Project & Program Management
• Manages small to medium technical projects, including scope definition, schedules, budgets, and resource planning, without direct people management responsibility.
• Provides technical oversight to project teams to ensure quality, schedule, and financial milestones are achieved.
• Organizes and coordinates external and interdepartmental activities to deliver project outcomes on time and within budget.
• Supports planning and execution of complex, multi stakeholder technical projects within the department.
Collaboration, Communication & Industry Engagement
• Develops and maintains strong working relationships with utilities, vendors, consultants, academia, and research organizations.
• Communicates technical strategies, findings, and results clearly and concisely—both verbally and in writing—to subject matter experts, program members, advisors, and industry forums.
• Prepares and presents research results through technical reports, guidelines, meetings, webcasts, workshops, and conferences.
• Regularly coordinates work activities across multiple programs and technical areas.
• Assists EPRI sales and Member Services staff by providing technical input and supporting member engagement activities.
• Contributes to proposal development, new research initiatives, and promotional efforts aligned with EPRI’s mission.
Mentorship & Organizational Contribution
• Provides technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff and early career engineers.
• Contributes to the development of research or service opportunities that solve member problems and deliver actionable, high value insights.
Required Qualifications & Experience
Education
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related technical field required (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Experience
• Minimum 10 years of experience in a utility, inspection vendor, or closely related industrial field.
• Demonstrated experience managing or leading technical projects, preferably within regulated or code driven environments.
• Practical experience with inspection qualification, performance demonstration, or inspection reliability programs strongly preferred.
Certifications & Technical Credentials
• Ultrasonic Testing (UT) certification to Level II or Level III (Level III strongly preferred).
• Certifiable to Level II in at least one additional NDE method:
o Visual Testing (VT) strongly preferred
o Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), or Radiographic Testing (RT) acceptable.
• Familiarity with applicable industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, ISO, or equivalent) related to NDE and inspection performance.
Technical Skills
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data analysis and technical reporting.
• Working proficiency in 2D and/or 3D CAD software for specimen concepts, layouts, or technical illustrations.
• Ability to analyze inspection data, document technical results, and support performance evaluations.
Professional Skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics to both technical and non technical audiences.
• Proven ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and deliver results in a collaborative environment.
• Comfortable influencing technical teams and stakeholders without formal authority.

Additional Requirements:
-Has developed relationships with primary advisors to a research area.
-Provides assistance to the EPRI sales staff in Member Services and EPRI International.
-Effectively communicates strategies and results, expressing thoughts clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing, to subject matter experts, program members and advisors through guidelines, reports, meetings, webcasts, workshops and conferences.
-Regularly communicates and coordinates work activities across programs.
-May provide oversight of a project team to assure technical and financial milestones are met.
-Organizes the external and interdepartmental activities ensuring completion of the project/product on schedule and within budget.
-Supports the planning and execution of complex project work within the technical department to meet member/client objectives; prepares and presents research reports.
-Manages small or medium (less complex) projects including budgets and resources without direct people management responsibilities.
-Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.
-Increased interactions and coordination of EPRI work with national and international technical networks (e.g, manufacturers, consultants, academia and research organizations)
-Begins to lead proposal efforts and new promotional work.
-Develops research or services opportunities of value to EPRI members that fit EPRI’s mission and capabilities. This will include solving customer problems, producing insights and information vital to the members, and delivering information in a manner that members and customers can and will apply.
-Continues to provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
