DEPARTMENT: School of Criminal Justice and Government Relations

REPORTS TO: Chair, School of Criminal Justice and Government Relations

EFFECTIVE DATE: TBD

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Part- Time

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Adjunct Instructor in Public Policy will teach in‑person undergraduate courses in Public Policy, including introductory and specialized policy courses. Responsibilities include delivering instruction, evaluating student learning, maintaining course documentation, and supporting student success. Instructors must meet all scheduled class sessions and follow university academic policies and procedures.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Deliver high-quality instruction aligned with KSU’s academic standards and the mission of the School of Criminal Justice and Government Relations. Support student learning across diverse educational settings, including traditional classroom, hybrid, and online formats, while preparing students for careers in criminal justice and public service.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach in‑person undergraduate courses in Public Policy.
  • Prepare and deliver course content aligned with program learning outcomes.
  • Maintain regular office hours for student support and engagement.
  • Assess student performance and submit grades in accordance with university deadlines.
  • Maintain an updated course shell in the Learning Management System (LMS) prior to the start of each semester.
  • Participate in required trainings and comply with institutional policies.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Duties may evolve based on university or programmatic needs.

Additional Information:

  • Modality Expectations: This position requires in-person, on-campus instruction. Online or hybrid instruction is not applicable for this role.
  • Background Check: Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a comprehensive background check.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in the discipline.

Preferred:

  • Prior teaching experience at the college level or university level.
  • Terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Public Policy, Public Administration, or related field.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems and online instructional tools.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Subject-matter expertise in Public Policy and related disciplines.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to engage and support students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to integrate practical, real-world applications into instruction.
  • Technological proficiency, including Microsoft Office and learning management systems.
  • Commitment to ethical standards, professionalism, and public service values.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position does not have any supervisory responsibility.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to remain stationary for extended periods during instruction or office hours.
  • Operate classroom and instructional technology effectively.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with students and colleagues.
  • Organize instructional materials, manage assessments, and meet academic deadlines reliably.
  • Instruction may occur in traditional classrooms, partner sites, or online environments.
