About This Position

The Role

GDM, a leading building services design consultancy based in London, is seeking a Senior Electrical Design Engineer who is a strong team player with excellent communication skills. You will work collaboratively with both internal and external design teams, confidently engaging with team members and stakeholders at all levels.

In this role, you will lead and manage electrical engineering projects, ensuring their successful completion within agreed timelines and quality standards, while contributing technical expertise across all stages of the design process. Guided by senior leadership, you will take ownership of defined workstreams, support project delivery, and help maintain the high standards our clients expect.

Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Delivery

  • Lead and manage electrical engineering projects, ensuring successful delivery in line with agreed timelines, budgets and quality standards.
  • Identify and interpret client requirements, agreeing project briefs and ensuring expectations are met throughout the project lifecycle.

Technical Design & Calculations

  • Produce electrical engineering calculations including load assessments, low‑voltage calculations and lighting calculations.
  • Assist in project surveys to ascertain the relevant design information for design calculations such as EPCs and building performance calculations.
  • Prepare design reports, specifications and high‑quality drawings suitable for client and project team presentation.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Assist in the development and presentation of project design proposals to clients and project teams.
  • Coordinate your own work with other disciplines, including in‑house specialists, ensuring fully integrated designs.
  • Maintain an organised schedule of personal tasks and available resources.

Planning & Resourcing

  • Predict and plan resource needs and associated costs/fees using a practical understanding of operating costs.

Professional Development & Contribution

  • Take responsibility for your own technical development, including independent learning and software training.
  • Provide mentoring and technical guidance to less experienced team members.
  • Engage proactively with social media and work-winning activities by contributing project-related content.

About You

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree (BSc, BEng, MEng), BTEC/HND in an engineering discipline, or equivalent demonstrable industry experience (e.g., Electrical/Building Services Engineering, Energy Engineering).
  • Previous relevant building services design experience is essential, ideally within commercial CAT A/CAT B office environments (preferred but not essential).
  • Proven client-facing experience delivering projects from concept through to completion.

Technical Competence

  • Highly proficient in producing electrical design reports, specifications and drawings.
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems including life-safety systems and business‑critical infrastructure.
  • Awareness of key sustainability drivers and their impact on electrical system design.
  • Strong knowledge of sector‑specific legislation, code requirements, standards, design guidance and future trends.

Personal Qualities

  • An enthusiastic engineer who enjoys working collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary teams and taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results.
  • Confident presenting design solutions to clients and external stakeholders.
  • Capable of working independently and managing small teams to deliver coordinated, high‑quality designs.
  • Creative, analytical thinker with the ability to evaluate solutions and understand their implications.
  • Passionate about energy and carbon‑efficient design, continuously seeking optimal outcomes for both client and environment.
  • Clear, articulate communicator able to explain design decisions and technical reasoning effectively.
