About This Position
The Commercial Lender is responsible for identifying, developing, and managing relationships with business members and prospects to grow the Credit Union’s commercial loan and deposit portfolios as well as ancillary business products. This role combines active external business development with ongoing management of a loan portfolio, including credit quality oversight, risk monitoring, and asset quality control. The Commercial Lender serves as a subject matter expert on business lending products and is expected to represent Credit Union of Georgia with professionalism in both member-facing and community settings.
Business Development
- Develop new business (loans, deposits, and related services) through the design and execution of an internal and external calling program; make regular, consistent contact with prospects and existing members to establish relationships and present Credit Union of Georgia products and services with the goal of closing new business and cross-selling additional services.
- Evaluate and service the needs of current and prospective members seeking business loans, deposit accounts, and other credit union products; discuss loan and deposit alternatives, credit criteria, interest rates, price alternatives, and documentation requirements.
- Negotiate loan terms and conditions with members and prospects; receive, review, and decision loan applications; evaluate and verify creditworthiness; request additional information as required; and present recommendations to Loan Committee as appropriate.
- Develop and execute tactics to achieve monthly loan and deposit production goals and profitability targets; assume full accountability for attaining assigned commercial loan and deposit goals.
- Identify opportunities to refer members to other areas of the credit union — including consumer lending, mortgage, treasury/cash management, and retail deposit services — to deepen member relationships and support the credit union’s broader growth objectives.
- Uphold and adhere to Credit Union of Georgia brand standards, including all steps of the member journEASE experience — Engage, Ask, Solve, and Excite — delivering top-level member service at every interaction.
- Maintain knowledge of competitors’ products, services, rates, terms, and market trends; relay relevant intelligence to management in a timely manner and provide input and recommendations on business lending interest rates.
- Actively participate in the communities served by the credit union by attending Chamber events, business association meetings, and charitable and community-wide events to build visibility, generate referrals, and advance the credit union’s presence in the business community.
Portfolio Management and Credit Quality
- Manage the commercial loan portfolio developed through this role with a focus on credit quality, risk mitigation, and early identification of emerging weaknesses; monitor portfolio performance on an ongoing basis and take appropriate action to protect the credit union’s asset quality.
- Analyze commercial loan and deposit portfolio reports; track, manage, and communicate relevant performance statistics including approvals, denials, delinquencies, and other indicators of portfolio health.
- Ensure all loan and deposit functions related to business members are performed in accordance with credit union policies, procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations; assist in maintaining ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements.
General
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of credit union products, services, policies, and procedures; be prepared to present and explain features and benefits to members and prospects at all times.
- Demonstrate teamwork through flexibility and effective cross-departmental communication to achieve commercial lending objectives and goals.
- Remain current on all required compliance training, including but not limited to cybersecurity awareness, Bank Secrecy Act, and other annual regulatory requirements.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Two or more years of progressive experience in commercial or business lending at a credit union or commercial bank; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated track record in business development and commercial loan portfolio management.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of commercial lending products, underwriting principles, credit analysis, and deposit services.
- Familiarity with applicable state and federal lending regulations and compliance requirements.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively in writing and as a skilled, professional public speaker; able to tactfully and professionally engage members, prospects, co-workers, and partner institutions.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-motivated, results-driven, and able to manage stress effectively; confident and persuasive with a professional appearance.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial statements, tax returns, legal documents, regulatory reports, and related materials.
- Ability to respond to inquiries and business loan or deposit-related scenarios from members, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required for community events or member needs.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license, appropriate vehicle registration, and adequate automobile insurance; ability and willingness to travel to other locations to meet business needs.
