Overview:
Under general supervision, operates and maintains mechanical systems including boilers, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, diesel engines, turbines, generators, pumps, condensers, compressors, life safety systems, and building automation systems; starts up, regulates and shuts down equipment; ensures that equipment operates safely, economically and within established limits; uses hand and power tools to perform repairs and maintenance ranging from a complete overhaul to replacing defective valves, gaskets or bearings; observes, controls and records relevant events and facts concerning operation and maintenance; routinely checks safety devices to detect potential mechanical problems, identifying and correcting any trouble that develops; may direct the work of apprentice engineers, boiler tenders and power plant workers; may perform routine building maintenance tasks that do not require a tradesman.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operates and maintains, renovates and repairs a variety of mechanical systems including all types of boiler systems and all other mechanical systems by performing routine work on boilers and steam systems; heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems; building automation systems; diesel engines, turbines, generators; pumps, piping and compressed gas systems; refrigeration and electrical systems and numerous other physical functions.
- Starts up, regulates, repairs and shuts down equipment; ensures that the equipment operates in a safe, effective and efficient manner within established limits by monitoring attached meters, gauges, and other instruments and computerized controls; manually controls equipment and makes necessary adjustments.
- Uses hand and power tools to perform repairs and maintenance ranging from a complete overhaul to replacing defective valves, gaskets or bearings.
- Records relevant events and facts concerning operations and maintenance in an equipment log; observes, controls and records steam pressure, temperature, water level, power output and fuel consumption.
- Detects potential mechanical problems by observing the machinery; routinely checks safety devices, identifying and correcting any trouble that develops; performs routine maintenance such as repairing and replacing pumps, motors and other operating equipment, lubricating moving parts, replacing filters, and removing soot and corrosion that can reduce operating efficiency; tests and chemically treats hydronic systems to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits.
- May be in charge of maintenance and repair of all mechanical systems in a building; may direct the work of apprentice engineers, boiler tenders and power plant workers; may perform routine building maintenance tasks that do not require a tradesman.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the class.
Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and the equivalent of the successful completion of an apprenticeship program necessary to qualify as journeyman stationary engineer.
The following may be substituted for the experience requirement:
- four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high-pressure stationary boilers or
- experience equivalent to two years journeyman level work in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning industry or
- successful completion of the Illinois Secretary of State Stationary Apprentice Engineer Training Program
- Requires CFC Certification under USFPA Section 608 rules.
- Requires extensive knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in the operation of high-pressure coal, gas or oil-fired boilers and their auxiliaries.
- Requires working knowledge of the operation of electrical generating equipment.
- Requires ability to direct the work of employees engaged in the maintenance of mechanical systems.
- Requires the ability to keep simple records.
- Requires skill in the control and regulation of high-pressure boilers.
- Requires skill in the use of tools and equipment used in maintaining power-generating equipment.
- Requires ability to observe and judge the operating efficiency of power generating and allied machinery.
- Requires the ability to perform the physical functions and tasks associated with a journeyman stationary engineer including, but not limited to, overhead work, ladder climbing, squatting, kneeling and constant walking.
- Requires ability to lift up to twenty (20) pounds constantly, up to 50 pounds frequently, and over 100 pounds occasionally.
- Requires ability to push/pull up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Requires the ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Requires willingness to travel and possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license as required by individual positions within the class.
