Job Description

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

Provides essential custodial, janitorial services to other Hospital departments as directed by Director of Environmental services.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responds to calls for custodial/janitorial services from other Hospital departments; performs routine, organized tasks and activities as directed.
  2. Conducts regular building security checks inside and outside to ensure entry/exit doors are properly secured against unauthorized entry.
  3. Performs regular firewatch and equipment checks in accordance with departmental procedures.
  4. Work with the privacy officer on recycling and PHI program.
  5. Collect materials for recycling and confidential (PHI) Sort as needed per recycling and PHI program.
  6. Train and educate new employees and Environmental service staff on recycling and PHI program.
  7. Responsible for collecting, transporting and disposing of trash, and/or other waste materials from all designated areas of the hospital. Sanitizes all garbage cans and containers on a regular basis.
  8. Responsible for collecting, transporting and packaging Regulated Medical Waste in accordance with Hospital infection control policies, State and Federal rules and regulations. Sanitizes all garbage cans and containers on a regular basis.
  9. Collects and transports soiled linen to designated storage area.
  10. May act as messenger, security guard, traffic controller or parking lot attendant.
  11. Cleans, maintains and properly stores equipment and materials. Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe work area and job site.
  12. Completes documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  13. Must be able to adhere to established standards and procedures as specified in oral and written instructions. Seeks clarification of duties as needed.
  14. Must be available for all emergencies as deemed necessary by Director of Environmental services.
  15. When staffing needs dictate, will work an alternate shift or be scheduled to work on an on-call basis for snow removal operations. Employees scheduled on call must report within 30 minutes of receiving a call.

  5. Is knowledgeable and practices safely using infection control, universal precaution and safety protocols. Uses appropriate universal precautions, infection control practices, along with proper lifting and transfer techniques to promote patient and employee safety.
  6. Is knowledgeable and complies with hospital policies and procedures.
  7. May assist in the promotion of our institution and profession by participation in hospital promotion and health fair activities.
  8. Performs other duties as requested within the scope of applicable licensure, abilities and policies.

EDUCATION: High School graduate or equivalency.

EXPERIENCE: Six months.

CONTACTS: Close coordination with employees in own department; frequent contact with other hospital employees, patients and visitors.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Stands, walks and bends most of the day. Stoops, crouches, kneels and climbs ladders. Occasionally lifts and moves heavy objects.

WORKING CONDITIONS: May work in areas which are hot, dirty and cramped. Exposed to hazards associated with medical/infectious waste, hazardous chemicals and communicable diseases, chemicals, hot water, electricity, mechanical/electrical tools and equipment. Must be able to work various shift hours, holidays and weekends. Must be willing to accept infrequent overtime assignments as needed. Must possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
