Medical Assistant

Position Summary

At Women’s Specialists of New Mexico, our Medical Assistants play an essential role in delivering compassionate, high-quality women's healthcare. The Medical Assistant assists providers in delivering safe, efficient, and professional patient care while supporting our commitment to service, teamwork, accountability, communication, continuous improvement, and compassionate women's healthcare.

Primary Responsibilities

Patient Care and Clinical Support

  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures, including obtaining vital signs and patient history information.
  • Obtain and accurately perform point of care testing as indicted.
  • Administer injections and other clinical tasks within scope of practice.
  • Assist providers with examinations and procedures.
  • Obtain required consent forms and documentation.
  • Assist with patient education using approved educational materials and resources.
  • Complete postpartum follow-up calls and other patient outreach activities as assigned.
  • Correctly labeling and processing lab specimens, along with reviewing laboratory results and ensuring appropriate documentation within the patient record.

Documentation and Medical Records

  • Accurately document patient information, examination details, laboratory results, and updates to the patient record.
  • Maintain patient recalls and follow-up activities within the practice management system.
  • Prepare next-day charts and ensure providers have the information needed for patient care.
  • Mail pap smear report cards and complete other patient communications as appropriate.

Teamwork and Operational Excellence

  • Maintain clean, stocked, and organized exam rooms and clinical areas.
  • Work collaboratively and professionally with all departments and team members.
  • Support clinic efficiency and patient flow throughout the day.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and assist with additional responsibilities as needed to support patient care and team success.

Competency and Professional Development

  • Successfully complete required competency testing, including:
  • Blood Pressure
  • Gestational Dating
  • Injections
  • Clean Catch Urinalysis
  • Point of care testing, not limited to pregnancy testing.
  • Maintain required certifications and competencies.
  • Participate in ongoing learning and continuous improvement initiatives.

Additional Assignments

To ensure maximum flexibility and efficiency, cross-training is encouraged throughout the organization. Employees may be assigned additional duties and responsibilities as needed to support patient care and business operations.

Requirements:

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of Medical Assistant experience required.
  • OB/GYN or women's healthcare experience preferred.
  • Current Medical Assistant certification preferred.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, compassionate, patient-centered healthcare environment.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and computer systems is preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to hear, speak, and maintain visual acuity sufficient to perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to use hands and wrists for computer work, writing, telephone use, and clinical duties.
