Job Description

About Anchor Health

Anchor Health is Connecticut’s leading health center for the LGBTQ community. We provide groundbreaking, radically inclusive, gender-affirming, and sex-positive medical, mental health, and pharmacy care as well as supportive services to thousands of patients across Connecticut and beyond. Anchor Health continuously works to advance health equity for LGBTQ people through advocacy, community-building, education, and research.

About the role

Anchor Health is hiring a Psychiatric Medical Assistant (Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant) to join our growing behavioral health and psychiatry team in Hamden, CT. In this full-time medical assistant role, you will support psychiatric providers with in-person and telehealth visits, administer mental health screenings like the PHQ-9 and GAD-7, and keep clinic operations running smoothly.

If you are a CMA or RMA who wants meaningful work in mental health care and LGBTQ-affirming health care, this is your opportunity to make a real difference for patients who deserve compassionate, culturally competent care.

What you'll do

  • Room patients for in-person psychiatry visits, including vital signs, medication reconciliation, and patient questionnaires
  • Room patients for telehealth and video visits, confirming identity, location, and medications so patients are ready for their provider
  • Administer and enter mental health screening tools in Epic, such as the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and OCD screeners
  • Collect and process urine drug screens (urine toxicology / UTox) according to clinic protocols
  • Manage non-clinical Epic InBasket messages and tasks
  • Process incoming mail and faxes and route them to the right provider or team member
  • Pre-fill patient paperwork and forms so providers only complete the clinically relevant sections
  • Provide dedicated support for last-minute appointment rescheduling to reduce gaps in patient care
  • Document accurately in the electronic health record (EHR), Epic
  • Answer phone calls from patients, external providers, and pharmacies
  • Provide LGBTQ-competent referrals to other health and social services
  • Participate in staff meetings, community events, and organization-wide cultural competency training

Qualifications

Required:

  • Current medical assistant certification: Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists, or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants
  • At least 1 year of clinical medical assistant experience
  • At least 1 year of experience in a behavioral health, psychiatric, or LGBTQ health care setting
  • Experience maintaining a trauma-informed space
  • Strong communication skills, with tact, discretion, and sensitivity toward patients
  • Ability to work professionally with providers, nurses, pharmacy, case management, and administration
  • References and a criminal background check absent offenses impacting ability to perform the role
  • Compliance with Connecticut Executive Order 13G (COVID-19 vaccination or approved medical or religious exemption with weekly testing)

Preferred:

  • Spanish language fluency
  • Experience working with the LGBTQ community
  • Working knowledge of Epic EHR
  • Familiarity with behavioral health screening tools (PHQ-9, GAD-7)
Pay and Benefits

This full-time hourly position pays $21–$25 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits include:

  • PTO 10 Paid Holidays
  • Leave for military service, jury duty, family and medical emergencies, becoming a parent, and bereavement
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Employer-sponsored life and long-term disability insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with 5% employer match
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Employee assistance program (EAP)
Equal Opportunity Employer

We strongly encourage people of color, trans and nonbinary people, and queer people to apply. Anchor Health is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes everyone, including non-LGBTQ people, to join our team.
