Field Technician

Austin, Texas

INTERA Incorporated (INTERA) is seeking a self-motivated Field Technician for our Austin, Texas office. We are looking for a team-oriented individual with an interest in groundwater resources, hydrogeology, geology, and field investigations. This position will support groundwater supply, aquifer characterization, well development, aquifer testing, and water-resource projects throughout Texas and, occasionally, in neighboring states.

The successful candidate will support INTERA's hydrogeologists, geologists, engineers, and groundwater scientists mainly in the field and occasionally in the office. Success will be measured by dependable project execution, clear communication, and the ability to help project teams perform at a high level. This role offers opportunities to gain hands-on experience with groundwater investigations, drilling programs, aquifer testing, groundwater monitoring, field instrumentation, and technical data collection.

Responsibilities

  • Support aquifer characterization and groundwater resource evaluation projects.
  • Assist with drilling programs, including oversight of drilling activities, lithologic logging, well construction documentation, and coordination with contractors.
  • Support aquifer testing programs, including pumping tests, step-drawdown tests, slug tests, and injection testing.
  • Install, maintain, and download data from groundwater monitoring equipment including pressure transducers, dataloggers, flow meters, and water-quality instruments.
  • Collect groundwater, surface water, and environmental samples in accordance with project work plans and standard operating procedures.
  • Measure groundwater levels, flow rates, and field water-quality parameters.
  • Assist with well development and well rehabilitation activities.
  • Support borehole geophysical logging programs and related field activities.
  • Perform site inspections and field reconnaissance.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, daily logs, calibration records, and project documentation.
  • Compile, organize, and QA/QC field data.
  • Support preparation of figures, maps, tables, and project documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with project-specific health and safety requirements.

Coordinate with subcontractors and drilling contractors to ensure work is completed in accordance with project requirements.

Requirements:

Required Education and Skills

  • High school diploma, trade school, or equivalent.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience working with pumps, motors, generators, field instrumentation, or monitoring equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain accurate field records and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong verbal communication and writing skills.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 80%, primarily throughout Texas. Field assignments often follow a 10-days-on, 4-days-off schedule.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain.
  • Ability to lift equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Commitment to following field health and safety procedures.

Desired Education and Skills

  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Engineering Technology, Geography, Natural Resources, or related field.
  • One to three years of previous experience with mud logging, environmental consulting, groundwater investigations, drilling operations, construction oversight, surveying, water utilities, or related field activities.
  • Basic understanding of physical hydrogeology, hydraulic testing, and hydrogeologic data interpretation.
  • Experience measuring groundwater levels and collecting groundwater samples.
  • Familiarity with drilling methods, well construction, and aquifer testing.
  • Experience using GPS equipment and GIS software.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring instrumentation and dataloggers.
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Experience overseeing subcontractors and coordinating field activities.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and technical data management.
  • Strong dedicated approach for maintaining a safe working environment in both office and field environment settings.
