Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

The MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform) Workshop Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and testing of aerial work platforms, including scissor lifts, boom lifts, vertical mast lifts, and related equipment. The mechanic ensures all equipment is safe, reliable, and compliant with manufacturer specifications and safety regulations before being released for customer use.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and Repairs
  • Perform preventative maintenance on MEWPs and related equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic faults.
  • Repair and replace defective components, including engines, pumps, cylinders, hoses, motors, batteries, and control systems.
  • Complete major overhauls and rebuilds as required.
  • Conduct pre-delivery inspections (PDI) and post-rental inspections.

Equipment Testing

  • Perform operational and function testing of machines following repairs.
  • Verify equipment meets manufacturer performance standards and safety requirements.
  • Calibrate and adjust control systems when necessary.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure all repairs comply with OSHA, ANSI, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
  • Follow company safety procedures and use proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Identify and report safety concerns affecting equipment or facility operations.

Documentation

  • Accurately complete work orders, service reports, and inspection records.
  • Record parts used, labor hours, and repair details in company maintenance systems.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance histories for all equipment.

Parts and Inventory

  • Assist with identifying and ordering replacement parts.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels of commonly used components.
  • Report damaged or obsolete parts and equipment.

Customer Service Support

  • Provide technical support to field technicians and customers as required.
  • Explain repair recommendations and equipment conditions to supervisors or customers.
  • Support emergency repair requirements when needed.

Preferred Skills, Qualifications & Behaviors:

Qualifications Required:

High school diploma or GED.

Experience repairing aerial lifts, construction equipment, forklifts, heavy equipment, or industrial machinery.

Strong understanding of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.

Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.

Valid driver's license.

Preferred

Previous experience working on JLG, Genie, Skyjack, MEC, Snorkel, Haulotte, or similar equipment.

OSHA, ANSI, or manufacturer certification training.

CDL certification (if applicable).

Welding and fabrication experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.

Knowledge of battery-powered and engine-powered MEWPs.

Proficiency with electrical testing equipment and diagnostic software.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.

Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces.

Comfortable working at heights and around heavy equipment.

Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Typical Equipment Serviced: Scissor lifts, boom lifts, telehandlers, vertical mast lifts, material lifts, and other powered access equipment.
