Job Description: Auto Collision Repair Painter

The Painter is responsible for the accurate paint application for every vehicle repaired. The Painter is responsible for the consistent and timely delivery of the paint repair production services provided to the repair shop. The Painter must maintain Quality Assurance according to the highest standards. It is the Painter’s responsibility to manage the paint technician helpers, equipment, product usage and workspace in the paint area for maximum efficiency, organization and profitability.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Work Location: Full Time Hourly/Commission

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the management of all paint operations at the center.
  • Supervision of paint prepper team members including, ability to recruit, hire, terminate and perform company disciplinary action process in conjunction with the Center Leader
  • Participates in the establishment of goals and objectives for the paint team and administers the training accordingly
  • Ensures paint production schedule as designated by Center Leader each day.
  • Inspects quality of repairs received from Body Department and responsible for inspecting final paint quality before vehicle is sent to detail.
  • Ensures safe and organized vehicle flow in and out for the Paint department
  • Responsible for spray booth, monitoring all paint department equipment & tools for proper usage and maintenance.
  • Monitors and plans paint shop supplies & material usage for one week of repairs, maintaining availability and ensuring waste elimination.
  • Ensures a clean and safe work area, all paint techs utilize PPE equipment effectively, hazardous waste compliance is followed for the department.

Key Performance Metrics

  • Paint Gross Profit of 60% or higher with efficient paint usage and limited overuse
  • Customer Service Index Score 95+ for Quality, Done on Time, and Net Promoter Score
  • Cycle Time Efficiency

Skills/Qualifications:

  • I-CAR Gold Class and ASE certification is a plus.
  • Complete understanding of all facets of paint application for automobile collision repair.

  • Perform all assigned responsibilities according to the Company Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Continuously strive to improve the efficiency of the Paint department.
  • Participate in training programs as required to maintain the technical and professional skills and techniques necessary for this position
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area always, adhering to 5S organization.
  • Extend normal working hours as necessary to accommodate workload and customer requirements.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in an automotive collision repair and paint shop environment for extended periods.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods throughout the workday.
  • Ability to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach while preparing and painting vehicles.
  • Ability to work in various positions, including above shoulder level, below waist level, and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to use hands and fingers for repetitive sanding, masking, mixing, spraying, buffing, and operation of paint-related tools and equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate spray guns, paint mixing systems, sanding equipment, buffers, and other paint shop equipment.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions for extended periods while maintaining quality and production standards.
  • Ability to visually inspect vehicle surfaces for imperfections, coverage, color match, texture, and finish quality, including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision.
  • Ability to accurately distinguish colors, shades, and variations to ensure proper color matching and paint application.
  • Ability to enter, exit, and maneuver around vehicles of various sizes and configurations.
  • Ability to safely navigate around moving vehicles, equipment, tools, and active repair operations.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to noise, dust, paint fumes, solvents, chemicals, and varying temperatures while utilizing required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators and protective clothing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with paint preppers, technicians, production staff, and supervisors regarding repair status, color match concerns, and production needs.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all environmental, safety, and hazardous material handling procedures.
  • Ability to meet quality, productivity, and cycle-time expectations in a fast-paced production environment.
