Research Manager – RWJBarnabas Health

At RWJBarnabas Health, the Research Manager for Oncology Services plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they perform complex clinical research oversight and trial management according to strict medical, legal, and professional Good Clinical Practice standards. They are responsible for exercising professional judgment during protocol evaluations, ensuring accurate regulatory documentation, delivering trial-specific compliance, and maintaining seamless workflow collaboration within the multidisciplinary oncology department.

A typical day for a Research Manager may include:

  • Prepares operational plans for oncology clinical trials, clearly explains the process, and coordinates study activation through closeout procedures
  • Operates clinical trial management systems, electronic health records, computers, and database applications necessary to ensure a safe and accurate tracking and monitoring procedure
  • Assist physicians and principal investigators during study selection and protocol implementation by managing recruitment, screening, or enrollment activities
  • Sets up regulatory binders and other essential files following human subject protection guidelines, handles contracts negotiation, and reviews budgets to assist with fiscal management
  • Calibrates, maintains, and adjusts research quality metrics, and reports protocol deviations, adverse events, or other problems immediately to the appropriate support or departmental leadership
  • Monitors and calls out trial data metrics, alerting the healthcare team immediately to any changes in patient condition or compliance issues
  • Utilizes research software and documentation systems to enter accurately identified and verified records of trial participants, and retrieves old laboratory or clinical reports when necessary
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of research protocols including IRB submissions, continuing reviews, safety, and audit preparation techniques
  • Collaborates professionally in an administrative or clinical research environment, working in close cooperation with physicians, advanced practice providers, and other technical staff
  • Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and the ability to assume multi-task duties and function under significant time pressures

To be considered for this Research Manager opportunity:

  • Graduate with a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; a Master's degree is highly preferred
  • Problem-solving, critical thinking, decisive judgment, collaboration, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Minimum of 3 years of managerial experience leading clinical research coordinators or specialists
  • Extensive experience managing oncology clinical trials from study activation through to closeout
  • Solid background in fiscal management, budget development, and contract negotiation for research protocols
  • Comprehensive knowledge of FDA regulations, ICH-GCP guidelines, IRB processes, and human subject protections
  • Proficiency working with clinical trial management systems (CTMS) and electronic medical records (EMR)
  • Certification through a recognized clinical trials professional organization (SoCRA or ACRP) is required
