Job Description

CLI Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a CLI Engineer based in India.

This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of developer tooling by building reliable, scalable, and intuitive command-line experiences.
You will contribute to products used by developers worldwide, improving local development workflows across multiple operating systems.
The position combines backend engineering, CLI architecture, and developer experience to create seamless technical solutions.
You will collaborate closely with product teams, engineers, customers, and the open-source community to deliver impactful improvements.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges in a remote, async, and fast-moving environment.
You will have ownership over critical tooling while helping define best practices for performance, security, and usability.

Accountabilities:

As a CLI Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain developer-facing tools that improve productivity and reliability. You will work across backend services and command-line interfaces, ensuring seamless integration between platform capabilities and local development environments.

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend APIs and services using TypeScript, applying scalable architecture patterns and prioritizing security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Build and improve command-line tooling that delivers a consistent, secure, and high-quality experience across Windows, Linux, and macOS environments.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to define end-to-end functionality, from API behavior to CLI user interactions.
  • Develop comprehensive testing strategies, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing, to maintain reliability as systems evolve.
  • Create clear documentation and support resources for API users, CLI users, and developer communities.
  • Manage releases, versioning, and backward compatibility for owned components.
  • Gather feedback from customers and open-source contributors to continuously improve developer experiences.
  • Contribute to engineering discussions, technical decisions, and improvements across the broader platform ecosystem.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced software engineer with strong backend development skills and a passion for building developer tools. You should be comfortable working independently, solving complex technical problems, and creating products that serve a global developer audience.

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, with strong experience in backend systems and/or developer-focused tooling.
  • Advanced proficiency in TypeScript and experience delivering production-grade API and server-side applications.
  • Experience building and maintaining command-line tools, including handling filesystem operations, subprocess management, terminal experiences, and cross-platform challenges.
  • Strong knowledge of programming languages commonly used for backend or CLI development, such as TypeScript/Node.js, Rust, Python, Go, or C++.
  • Experience creating intuitive CLI experiences with clear commands, helpful outputs, and actionable error handling.
  • Familiarity with package distribution and installation ecosystems such as npm, yarn, Homebrew, APT, Snap, Scoop, or Chocolatey.
  • Solid understanding of Git workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing practices.
  • Ability to work effectively in asynchronous, remote environments with strong ownership and communication skills.

Nice-to-have qualifications:

  • Contributions to open-source CLI tools, libraries, or backend frameworks.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or container-based development environments.
  • Familiarity with PostgreSQL, database migrations, and related technologies used in platform development.
  • Experience improving developer experience through tooling, automation, and documentation.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote work environment with flexibility to work from anywhere.
  • Access to coworking support through a membership or allowance program.
  • Equity ownership opportunities through an employee stock option plan.
  • Technology allowance to build and customize your ideal workspace setup.
  • Comprehensive health benefits, including full employee health insurance coverage and dependent support.
  • Annual company off-sites focused on collaboration, connection, and team building.
  • Flexible asynchronous work culture built on trust and autonomy.
  • Annual professional development budget for courses, books, conferences, and learning resources.
  • Opportunity to work with a globally distributed team and contribute to open-source technology.
