Manager Accounting

JOB SUMMARY

The Accounting Manager is responsible for the conservation, integrity, and maintenance of the organization’s financial records. This includes oversight of timely financial and statistical reporting, cash management, and the maintenance of the organization’s complete accounting system, including all general books and ledgers. The role ensures accurate preparation of financial statements and supports compliance with regulatory and audit requirements and adherence to collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) where applicable.

Under direction of the Controller, this position provides administrative, technical, and supervisory leadership for the Accounting Department and its personnel, ensuring efficient operations aligned with organizational goals and healthcare industry standards.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTION includes the following, and other duties may be assigned:

  • Oversee daily operations of Accounts Payable, Payroll, and General Ledger, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with organizational policies and CBAs.
  • In collaboration with the Payroll Manager, oversee payroll processes in accordance with union contracts, including wage scales, differentials, overtime rules, and benefits provisions.
  • Ensure vendor contract compliance and proper disbursement controls.
  • Assist the Controller with feasibility studies, financial modeling, and strategic initiatives.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and compliance.
  • Develop and monitor productivity metrics and financial trend analyses.
  • Coordinate timely completion of audits, cost reports, grant reporting, and regulatory filings with internal teams and external auditors.
  • Prepare and review audit schedules, supporting documentation, and required financial reports
  • Implement and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls consistent with GAAP, healthcare regulations, and audit standards.
  • Evaluate and strengthen internal control systems to ensure compliance and safeguard assets.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including Medicare/Medicaid reporting requirements.
  • Support month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate accounting staff in accordance with union agreements and organizational policies.
  • Collaborate with HR and union representatives, as needed, on matters related to payroll, staffing, and contract interpretation.

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field or equivalent years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Master’s degree (MBA, MAcc, or related) preferred.

Training and Experience

  • 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in a supervisory role.
  • Strong knowledge of internal controls and financial reporting.
  • Experience in a hospital or healthcare setting strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and knowledge of collective bargaining agreements (preferred).
  • Familiarity with healthcare reimbursement (Medicare/Medicaid) (preferred).
  • Knowledge of union payroll practices and labor contract compliance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective leadership and team management.
  • Clear communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to manage deadlines in a regulated environment.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) (preferred)
