Job Description

Description:

The Staff Accountant owns day-to-day accounting for two growing companies: EleXcor and Mother Plumber. You will run accounts payable and accounts receivable, support the month-end close, and produce accurate financial reports for both businesses. This is a hands-on role for someone who likes variety, works well across two sets of books, and wants to grow with companies that are expanding. This person will sit at our Southwest Indianapolis EleXcor office but travel to our Bloomington Mother Plumber office 1-2x a week.

About us

EleXcor and Mother Plumber are part of the KennMar family of companies, a growing group of about 290 employees that also includes KennMar Construction and Benge's Ace Hardware. Mother Plumber is a service plumbing company rooted in Bloomington, Indiana, and expanding into Indianapolis. EleXcor joined the KennMar family in 2026 and is our fast growing Electrical business.

Key responsibilities

Accounts payable

• Process vendor invoices, expense reports, and payments for both companies, including 3-way match to POs and receiving.

• Code expenses accurately to the right entity, GL account, job, and department.

• Maintain vendor master data, W-9s, and certificates of insurance; prepare 1099s at year-end.

• Run payment cycles (check, ACH, credit card) and reconcile vendor statements.

• Track and allocate shared or intercompany costs between EleXcor, Mother Plumber, and KennMar.

Accounts receivable

• Create and send customer invoices, including job and service-call billing, progress billing, and retainage where applicable.

• Apply cash receipts and reconcile deposits, merchant processing, and financing payments.

• Manage collections: follow up on past-due accounts, maintain AR aging, and partner with operations on disputed invoices.

• Process customer credits and refunds, and maintain customer records.

Financial reporting and close

• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for each company.

• Complete month-end close tasks: journal entries, accruals, prepaid and fixed asset schedules, and depreciation.

• Reconcile bank, credit card, and balance sheet accounts monthly.

• Support job costing and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting so leaders can see job profitability.

• Prepare variance analysis and management reports for company leadership and KennMar.

• Support budgeting, audits or reviews, and sales and use tax and other compliance filings.

General

• Improve accounting processes and controls as both companies grow and integrate into KennMar systems.

• Answer accounting questions from field managers, office staff, and vendors.

• Perform other accounting duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Required

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, or equivalent experience.

• 2+ years of hands-on experience in AP, AR, and general ledger accounting.

• Working knowledge of GAAP, month-end close, and account reconciliations.

• Strong Excel skills (lookups, pivot tables, basic formulas).

• Experience with an accounting system such as QuickBooks, Sage, or similar.

• High accuracy, good organization, and the ability to manage deadlines for two companies at once.

Preferred

• Experience in construction, trades, or field service businesses (electrical, plumbing, HVAC).

• Job costing, WIP, or progress billing experience.

• Experience with multi-entity accounting or intercompany transactions.

• Familiarity with field service software (such as ServiceTitan) or construction accounting software.

• Progress toward a CPA or similar certification.

What success looks like in year one

• AP and AR run on time each month for both companies, with a clean AR aging.

• Monthly close completed and financials delivered by an agreed date each month.

• Leaders at both companies trust the numbers and use them to make decisions.

Physical requirements: Office-based work involving extended computer use; occasional travel between company locations.
