Job Description

Staff Engineer - Releases

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Engineer - Releases based in Australia.

This role offers the opportunity to shape a foundational release platform used by high-performing engineering organizations at significant scale.
You will provide hands-on technical leadership across architecture, distributed systems, reliability, security, and developer experience.
A key focus will be building a trusted release control plane that provides visibility, governance, and an immutable record of software releases.
You will help evolve this foundation toward progressive delivery capabilities, including staged rollouts, canary analysis, automated promotion, and rollback.
The role requires close collaboration with engineers, product managers, designers, customers, and technical stakeholders to solve complex problems.
You will influence technical strategy across teams while remaining deeply involved in design, implementation, troubleshooting, and technical decision-making.
This is an ideal opportunity for a pragmatic technical leader who enjoys solving challenging infrastructure problems and improving how software is delivered at scale.

Accountabilities
  • Own the technical direction and architecture of the releases platform, including its core data model and relationships across services, environments, artifacts, actors, and release states.
  • Lead critical technical decisions involving security, reliability, scalability, and the design of immutable evidence and policy-gating infrastructure.
  • Drive complex integrations with CI/CD and source-control systems, ensuring reliable ingestion and consistent release information across the platform.
  • Design systems that can support progressive delivery capabilities such as canary deployments, staged rollouts, blue/green deployments, health-based promotion, and automated rollback.
  • Build, scale, and improve production systems and tools that support sophisticated engineering organizations.
  • Investigate and resolve complex performance, reliability, infrastructure, and distributed-systems challenges across multiple layers of the technology stack.
  • Work directly with customers and internal stakeholders to understand release management and governance challenges and translate them into practical technical solutions.
  • Improve developer experience through automation, tooling, streamlined processes, and reliable engineering workflows.
  • Contribute to cross-team infrastructure, frameworks, and engineering initiatives that improve the wider technology organization.
  • Mentor engineers through documentation, pairing, technical discussions, and knowledge sharing while raising engineering standards across teams.
  • Communicate architectural trade-offs clearly and build alignment around complex technical decisions.
  • Help establish systems and practices that support release governance, observability, compliance, and measurable engineering performance.
Requirements
  • Proven experience operating production systems at significant scale, preferably using Go, Ruby on Rails, or comparable programming languages.
  • Strong experience designing and operating distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and complex containerized applications; AWS experience is preferred.
  • Experience designing event-driven architectures, audit-log systems, immutable records, event sourcing, or append-only data models is highly valuable.
  • Strong understanding of relational databases such as PostgreSQL, including performance optimization, replication, and scalability considerations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in infrastructure reliability, observability, distributed systems, and production troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with continuous delivery systems, deployment pipelines, release orchestration, or comparable platforms.
  • Understanding of progressive delivery concepts, including canary deployments, blue/green releases, feature flags, health-based promotion, and rollback strategies.
  • Experience with DORA metrics, release governance, compliance, or audit requirements in large-scale or regulated engineering environments.
  • Experience integrating source control and CI/CD platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, or comparable systems.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, Terraform, or other infrastructure-as-code technologies is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of Kafka, Flink, or other streaming and event-driven technologies is a plus.
  • Background in SRE, systems programming, or Linux/Unix internals is valuable.
  • Understanding of secure system design and cloud security best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly within distributed or remote-first teams.
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Collaborative and pragmatic approach, with the ability to balance technical excellence against business and customer needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, lead technical discussions, influence across teams, and drive alignment without relying on formal authority.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation package including salary, equity, and additional benefits.
  • Remote-first working environment for eligible candidates in the United States Pacific and ANZ regions.
  • Opportunity to work on technically challenging distributed systems and release infrastructure at significant scale.
  • Meaningful ownership over architecture, technical strategy, and engineering practices.
  • Opportunities for professional growth, technical leadership, mentoring, and cross-team influence.
  • Collaborative and inclusive culture that values autonomy, kindness, and strong engineering practices.
  • Opportunity to work directly on technology that helps leading engineering teams deliver software faster, more reliably, and more safely.
  • Flexible remote environment designed to provide meaningful overlap across engineering teams.
  • Reasonable accommodations and support throughout the recruitment and interview process.
