Job Description
Class A Truck Driver – Over-the-Road (OTR)
Location: Stockton, California (home base)
Position Summary
The Class A Truck Driver is responsible for safely operating a commercial motor vehicle to transport freight over long distances to and from customer locations. This role is based out of Stockton, CA and typically involves multi-day trips, adherence to federal and California safety and hours-of-service rules, and professional interaction with customers and dispatch.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Safe Operation of Tractor-Trailer: Operate a Class A commercial motor vehicle in a safe, lawful, and courteous manner.
Follow all FMCSA/DOT regulations, traffic laws, and company safety policies.
Route Execution and Scheduling
Drive assigned routes as dispatched, including long-haul and over-the-road (OTR) trips.
Follow dispatch instructions and meet scheduled pickup and delivery times when reasonably possible and lawful under hours-of-service (HOS) rules.
Communicate with dispatch regarding delays, route issues, weather, traffic, and other conditions affecting on-time performance.
Inspections and Equipment Care
Perform required pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of tractor and trailer, including brakes, tires, lights, coupling, and safety equipment.
Report equipment defects, maintenance needs, or safety issues promptly according to company procedures.
Maintain the cleanliness and general condition of the vehicle.
Cargo Handling and Documentation
Verify load information, including bills of lading, shipping papers, and special instructions.
Ensure cargo is properly loaded, balanced, and secured, in compliance with applicable cargo securement rules and company policies.
When required, assist with:
Opening/closing trailer doors
Placing/retrieving load locks, straps, and other securement devices
Limited driver-assist loading/unloading, if and as specified by the company and the customer
Recordkeeping and Compliance
Accurately record duty status and driving time using an electronic logging device (ELD) or other approved method, in full compliance with HOS regulations.
Maintain accurate trip records, including fuel receipts, scale tickets, maintenance reports, and delivery documentation.
Follow company procedures for reporting accidents, citations, roadside inspections, freight claims, and other incidents.
Customer Service and Professionalism
Interact professionally with customers, shippers, receivers, law enforcement, and the public.
Represent the company in a courteous, respectful manner at all times.
Follow customer-specific site rules and safety requirements, consistent with applicable law.
Other Duties
Attend required safety meetings and training sessions.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the position.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Typically 21 years of age or older (for interstate OTR operations).
Meet applicable DOT/FMCSA medical and driver qualification standards, including:
Current and valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT medical card) from a certified examiner.
Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets company and insurer requirements.
Ability to pass required drug and alcohol testing, including pre-employment and, if applicable, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion testing, in compliance with federal and California law.
Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions related to routes, safety procedures, and customer requirements.
Basic proficiency with:
ELDs and in-cab communication devices
GPS or navigation tools (used in a hands-free, legally compliant manner)
Preferred Qualifications
Prior over-the-road (OTR) or long-haul Class A driving experience.
Experience with:
Dry van / refrigerated / flatbed
Strong safety record and positive roadside inspection history.
Good communication skills and a focus on customer service.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Ability to:
Sit and drive for extended periods (multiple hours at a time).
Climb in and out of the tractor and trailer using steps and handholds.
Open and close heavy trailer doors and handle load securement equipment such as straps or load locks.
Occasionally lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50–75 pounds in connection with equipment or limited driver-assist freight handling, if required by the job and consistent with applicable law.
Work in varied environments and weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind, snow/ice, dust, etc.).
Must be able to meet the vision, hearing, and physical standards required for a CDL driver under applicable federal and California rules, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Work Schedule and Travel
Position is over-the-road (OTR):
Multi-day and sometimes multi-week trips away from home.

Schedule is based on:
Dispatch assignments
Customer needs
Compliance with hours-of-service regulations
Work may include: Weekends and holidays; Early morning, daytime, evening, and/or nighttime driving, depending on routes and freight needs.
Compensation and Pay Structure
Base Pay:
$0.52 per mile (base rate).
This applies to:
All dispatched miles,
Deadhead miles are paid according to dispatch.
Additional Pay :
Detention pay
Layover or breakdown pay
Stop-off pay or extra pick/drop fees
Driver-assist or unloading pay (if applicable)
Safety or performance bonuses
Per diem or other allowances (consistent with tax and wage laws)
Overtime and California Wage Rules:
Drivers based in California are generally subject to California wage and hour rules, including:
Minimum wage requirements: see California minimum wage
Mileage pay must, on average, at least meet or exceed California minimum wage for all hours worked, and overtime rules can still apply even for mileage-based compensation.
