Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a DevOps & Platform Engineer based in South Africa.
This role is an early and influential opportunity within a focused innovation environment at a fast-growing fintech.
You will own the engineering foundations that allow teams to move ideas into production quickly, safely, and reliably.
Your scope will cover CI/CD, Azure infrastructure, containerisation, deployment safety, migrations, and production observability.
You’ll work closely with platform, data, and engineering specialists while having meaningful influence over how operational foundations are designed.
The role is highly hands-on, with a strong emphasis on diagnosing real production issues and building systems that can scale with the business.
You’ll suit an environment where autonomy, curiosity, pragmatic problem-solving, and fast execution matter more than bureaucracy.
This is an opportunity to make rapid delivery safer and more reliable while shaping the platform practices of an evolving fintech organization.
- Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines that enable rapid, reliable, and safe deployments into production.
- Own the Azure infrastructure layer, including environments, configuration, secrets management, and networking.
- Manage containerised workloads using Docker and Azure-managed services, ensuring reliable operation and deployment.
- Establish and maintain production observability through effective logging, metrics, and alerting.
- Monitor production systems and use observability data to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve live incidents before they become significant business issues.
- Execute database and schema migrations safely, including designing rollback strategies that can be relied upon when deployments or migrations fail.
- Work closely with the Data Engineering function to support and evolve the data platform underpinning the innovation pod.
- Help establish deployment, infrastructure, and operational practices that allow development teams to move quickly without compromising reliability.
- Document infrastructure, operational decisions, and processes clearly so that production teams can confidently take ownership of the systems you build.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of platform reliability, deployment safety, and engineering workflows within a small, highly collaborative team.
- 3–5 years of professional experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, or a closely related role.
- Proven production experience owning CI/CD pipelines end to end, from implementation through ongoing optimisation and troubleshooting.
- Strong hands-on experience with Docker and Azure-managed services.
- Practical observability expertise, including logging, metrics, alerting, and diagnosing live production incidents rather than simply configuring dashboards.
- Experience managing database or schema migrations in production, including handling failures and implementing effective rollback strategies.
- Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, deployment practices, configuration management, and production reliability.
- Comfortable working in a small team where there is no large platform function to provide ready-made solutions or extensive operational support.
- Ability to work autonomously while collaborating closely with platform, data, engineering, and product stakeholders.
- Curious, solutions-oriented mindset with a pragmatic approach to solving infrastructure and operational challenges.
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability, with a focus on enabling teams to deliver quickly without sacrificing safety or reliability.
- Infrastructure as Code experience with Terraform, Pulumi, or Bicep is advantageous.
- Experience working in fintech or another regulated environment is a plus.
- Exposure to modern data technologies such as dbt or Snowflake is beneficial.
- Interest in agentic or AI-assisted development workflows is advantageous.
- A strong documentation habit, including experience creating Architecture Decision Records (ADRs), runbooks, incident reports, or similar operational documentation.
- Remote working opportunity within South Africa.
- Full-time position within a fast-growing, technology-driven fintech environment.
- Significant influence over the operational and platform foundations of an early-stage innovation function.
- Opportunity to work closely with experienced platform and data engineering specialists.
- High degree of ownership and autonomy in shaping implementation approaches and engineering practices.
- Collaborative culture focused on curiosity, diverse perspectives, ambitious execution, and meaningful impact.
- Opportunity to solve challenging production and infrastructure problems in a business-critical environment.
- Exposure to modern cloud, containerisation, data, observability, and AI-assisted engineering technologies.
- Environment that values practical solutions and enables fast delivery without unnecessary bureaucracy.
- Opportunity to contribute directly to technology that supports South African small and medium-sized businesses.
