Job Description
The Indirect Tax Analyst is responsible for the preparation, filing, reconciliation, and compliance of multi-state sales and use tax obligations. This role partners closely with Finance, Customer Service, Operations, IT, and external tax advisors to ensure accurate tax reporting, maintain compliance with state and local tax regulations, and support process improvements.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with large transaction volumes and multiple jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare/Review and file monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.
- Reconcile sales tax payable accounts and investigate variances.
- Review sales transactions to ensure proper taxability and exemption treatment.
- Maintain and validate exemption certificates and resale documentation.
- Research state and local tax regulations and assess compliance impacts.
- Assist with sales and use tax audits, information requests, and state inquiries.
- Partner with Customer Service, Operations, and IT to resolve tax-related issues and improve transaction accuracy.
- Act as a liaison between finance and customer service for process improvement.
- Monitor nexus requirements and support registration efforts in new jurisdictions.
- Identify opportunities to automate and streamline sales tax processes.
- Assist with month-end close activities related to indirect taxes.
- Maintain documentation of tax processes, procedures, and controls.
- Support special projects related to tax compliance, ERP implementations, and system enhancements.
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- 3+ years of sales tax, indirect tax, or general accounting experience.
- Strong understanding of sales and use tax concepts.
- Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
Preferred
- Experience with multi-state sales and use tax compliance.
- Experience with Avalara or similar tax automation software.
- Public accounting or manufacturing/distribution industry experience.
