Scientific Director (Medical Publications)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Scientific Director (Medical Publications) based in the United States.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced scientific communications leader to drive high-impact medical publication and communication strategies across complex life sciences accounts. The role combines scientific expertise, strategic thinking, client partnership, and team leadership to deliver exceptional medical communications solutions. You will oversee the development of high-quality scientific content, guide publication planning initiatives, and serve as a trusted advisor to key stakeholders. Working in a collaborative and innovation-driven environment, you will help shape scientific narratives that support healthcare advancements while mentoring talented scientific professionals. This position offers significant autonomy, visibility, and influence across both client engagements and internal scientific excellence initiatives.

Accountabilities
  • Lead the scientific strategy and direction for one or more large, complex medical communications accounts, ensuring alignment with client objectives and broader communication goals.
  • Develop and oversee integrated publication and scientific communication plans, including manuscripts, congress materials, training programs, digital assets, and other regulated medical content.
  • Serve as the primary scientific advisor for client stakeholders, facilitating strategic discussions, workshops, advisory boards, and scientific presentations.
  • Establish and maintain high standards for scientific quality, accuracy, consistency, and compliance across all deliverables.
  • Conduct in-depth scientific reviews and provide expert guidance on publication standards, medical communication best practices, and industry guidelines.
  • Support medical, legal, and regulatory review processes while addressing complex scientific challenges and ensuring compliance requirements are met.
  • Contribute to business growth through scientific leadership in proposals, pitches, resource planning, forecasting, and account development activities.
  • Manage and mentor a team of scientific professionals, providing coaching, performance management, career development support, and ongoing training opportunities.
  • Drive operational excellence by improving workflows, identifying risks, optimizing processes, and ensuring effective project execution across assigned accounts.
Requirements
  • Advanced degree in a scientific, medical, healthcare, or related discipline such as MSc, PhD, PharmD, MD, or equivalent experience.
  • Approximately 6+ years of experience in medical communications, medical writing, scientific publications, or related healthcare communications environments.
  • Proven experience leading multiple accounts, publication programs, or large-scale scientific communication initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success managing and developing scientific teams, including direct people leadership and coaching responsibilities.
  • Exceptional scientific writing, editing, data interpretation, and critical review skills.
  • Strong knowledge of publication planning, medical communications standards, clinical research methodologies, and industry regulations.
  • Familiarity with Good Publication Practices (GPP), ICMJE guidelines, PhRMA standards, and medical, legal, and regulatory review processes.
  • Excellent client-facing communication, presentation, facilitation, and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, collaboration platforms, and scientific content development tools.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment and travel occasionally as needed.
