Job Description
This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Software Engineer III, Backend - Orchestration in United Kingdom.
This role sits at the heart of a global payments infrastructure, where backend engineering directly impacts how millions of transactions are routed, processed, and optimized across providers and markets. You will help build and evolve the orchestration layer that determines how payments flow through complex systems, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and resilience at scale. The environment is highly technical and distributed, requiring strong ownership and comfort with ambiguity. You will work on systems that handle real payment volume, where every design decision influences performance, fallback logic, and overall payment success rates. Collaboration with senior engineers and cross-functional teams is key to shaping architecture and improving platform-wide standards. This is a fully remote, high-autonomy setting where engineers are expected to drive work end-to-end and contribute to a culture of technical excellence.
- Own backend features end-to-end, from scoping and design through implementation, deployment, and production monitoring, ensuring transparency on progress and risks.
- Design and build scalable orchestration services that handle high-volume payment flows with strong guarantees around reliability, performance, and correctness.
- Develop and evolve routing logic, fallback mechanisms, and workflow systems that optimize payment success across multiple providers and markets.
- Participate in architecture discussions, propose improvements to system design, and advocate for maintainable, well-structured service boundaries.
- Monitor production systems, proactively detect issues, and take ownership of incident response and resolution when needed.
- Collaborate with engineers across the orchestration domain on code reviews, design sessions, and technical decision-making to shape platform evolution.
- Strong backend engineering experience with the ability to deliver production-ready systems from ambiguous requirements with minimal guidance.
- Solid understanding of distributed systems principles, including failure modes, scalability challenges, and resilient system design.
- Experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs and backend services with a focus on reliability and observability.
- Proven ability to own systems end-to-end, including monitoring, deployment, and post-release operational responsibility.
- Confidence contributing to architecture discussions, challenging assumptions, and improving technical direction when needed.
- Experience in fintech, payments, or infrastructure-heavy environments is a plus, but strong engineering fundamentals are most important.
- Comfortable working in remote-first, high-autonomy environments with shifting context and evolving priorities.
- Fully remote-first and globally distributed working model
- Competitive share options
- Minimum 25 days of annual leave with uncapped holiday policy
- Co-working space access and global workation opportunities
- Annual company retreats and distributed team gatherings
- Private medical insurance (location dependent)
- Generous learning and development budget
- Home office setup allowance (£500)
- High-quality equipment provided for your role
- Additional location-dependent perks and benefits
