Job Description

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer in the United States.

This role offers the opportunity to lead the design and delivery of advanced mechanical systems for large-scale, mission-critical data center infrastructure. You will act as a key technical authority across the full lifecycle of HVAC and cooling system development, from early-stage design through commissioning and operational handover. The position involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical, structural, construction, and operations stakeholders. You will influence critical design decisions that directly impact system reliability, efficiency, and scalability in high-performance environments. Working in a fast-paced, innovation-driven setting, you will help shape next-generation cooling strategies for hyperscale and enterprise data centers. This is a high-impact role suited for a hands-on engineering leader passionate about technical excellence and continuous improvement.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will lead end-to-end mechanical system design for mission-critical data center projects, ensuring high-quality delivery and operational performance. You will coordinate with internal teams and external partners to resolve complex engineering challenges and maintain alignment across disciplines. You will oversee the technical integrity of all mechanical documentation and ensure compliance with industry standards and project requirements. Additionally, you will drive innovation in cooling technologies, optimize system performance, and contribute to the evolution of internal engineering practices. You will also support project execution through construction oversight, commissioning leadership, and post-turnover operational guidance.

  • Lead mechanical system design from concept development through commissioning and handover
  • Coordinate with development, procurement, construction, operations teams, and external engineering partners
  • Review and ensure quality control of mechanical drawings, models, and technical documentation
  • Ensure compliance with ASHRAE standards, building codes, and internal design requirements
  • Evaluate and integrate advanced cooling technologies and energy-efficient system solutions
  • Manage mechanical design schedules, budgets, and value engineering initiatives
  • Lead commissioning activities, including factory and site testing, TAB coordination, and system validation
  • Provide field support during construction and resolve installation and technical issues
  • Support risk identification and mitigation across mechanical system design and execution
  • Contribute to continuous improvement through lessons learned and process standardization
Requirements

You bring extensive experience in mechanical engineering design within the A/E industry, with a strong focus on mission-critical or data center environments. You have a deep technical understanding of HVAC systems, cooling plant design, and thermal performance optimization. You are experienced in leading complex projects, coordinating across multiple stakeholders, and ensuring high-quality engineering delivery. Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to manage technical detail in fast-paced environments.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (data center or mission-critical focus preferred)
  • 10+ years of A/E industry experience, ideally in hyperscale or enterprise data centers
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license required
  • Strong Revit BIM experience with large-scale mechanical system coordination
  • Expertise in data center cooling systems (chilled water, air and liquid cooling, heat exchangers, etc.)
  • Experience with thermal modeling and analysis tools (HAP, TRACE, IES, CFD, or similar)
  • Background in commissioning mechanical systems including chillers, pumps, AHUs, CRAH/CRAC units
  • Knowledge of redundancy strategies (N, N+1, 2N) and fault-tolerant design principles
  • Experience supporting integrated system testing, MOPs, SOPs, and commissioning documentation
  • Strong understanding of energy efficiency metrics (PUE, WUE) and sustainable design practices
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead cross-functional technical discussions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation aligned with experience and market benchmarks
  • Flexible work arrangements supporting work-life balance
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Retirement savings plans with employer contributions
  • Paid time off, holidays, and wellness-focused leave policies
  • Opportunities for professional growth and continuous technical development
  • Exposure to cutting-edge data center technologies and large-scale infrastructure projects
  • Collaborative, innovation-driven engineering environment
