About the Role

As a Medical Assistant (Triage), you will provide direct clinical support to physicians and advanced practice providers while helping maintain efficient patient flow and high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include patient intake and triage, obtaining vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examinations and procedures, completing chart preparation, assisting with clinical procedures and diagnostic testing, coordinating provider orders, maintaining accurate EMR documentation, and supporting daily back-office clinical operations.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Support

  • Prepare and triage patients by obtaining vital signs, medical histories, medication lists, allergies, and other relevant clinical information
  • Support new patient, follow-up, post-operative, telemedicine, urgent care, wellness, procedure, and specialty appointments
  • Prepare patients and examination rooms for provider visits and procedures
  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers with examinations, injections, blood draws, specimen collection, diagnostic testing, and other approved clinical procedures
  • Assist with IV therapy when authorized and within scope of practice
  • Provide professional and compassionate patient care throughout the visit

Chart Preparation & Provider Orders

  • Review patient charts and ensure required documentation, imaging, and diagnostic results are available before scheduled appointments
  • Complete chart preparation at least two business days before scheduled appointments
  • Contact patients when required imaging or documentation has not been completed
  • Coordinate medication refill requests, referrals, imaging, diagnostic testing, durable medical equipment (DME), physical therapy, chiropractic care, and other provider orders
  • Follow up on incomplete provider orders and document patient responses
  • Ensure clinical orders and referrals are properly documented and closed within the EMR

Documentation & EMR

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely clinical documentation
  • Monitor EMR work queues, Athena buckets, provider tasks, and clinical workflows throughout the day
  • Document patient information, provider instructions, clinical communications, and completed services accurately
  • Protect patient information and maintain HIPAA compliance at all times

Laboratory & Clinical Operations

  • Collect, process, label, and document laboratory specimens and urine drug screens
  • Prepare laboratory requisitions and specimens for courier pickup
  • Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked examination rooms
  • Monitor clinical supplies, medications, and equipment needed for patient care
  • Follow infection prevention, OSHA, safety, and Company standards

Communication & Team Support

  • Answer designated clinical backline calls and respond appropriately to clinical requests
  • Work closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, front office staff, Patient Advocates, and other departments
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training, continuing education, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Perform additional clinical and operational duties as assigned
Requirements: Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred
  • Minimum of one (1) year of Medical Assistant experience required
  • Experience in a physician office, urgent care, specialty practice, pain management, orthopedics, or other outpatient healthcare setting
  • Current BLS certification or ability to obtain certification within the introductory period
  • Experience using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems
  • Ability to perform clinical procedures within the Medical Assistant scope of practice
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, multitasking, and time-management skills
  • Dependable with regular and reliable attendance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent certification preferred
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
  • Two or more years of Medical Assistant experience preferred
  • Experience in Pain Management, Orthopedics, Neurology, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Urgent Care, or another specialty practice
  • Experience with Athenahealth or a comparable EMR system
  • Experience assisting with injections, IV therapy, laboratory specimen collection, diagnostic testing, and clinical procedures
  • Experience working in a multi-provider or multi-location healthcare organization
