Job Summary:
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the shop, ensuring the timely and efficient maintenance and repair of heavy equipment and diesel trucks. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring a seasoned professional with a strong background in diesel mechanics, proven management skills, and a commitment to safety, productivity, and continuous improvement. In addition to managing shop operations and personnel, the Shop Manager is expected to actively perform mechanical diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs as operational needs require.
Essential Functions:
- Ownership and Caring. Lead and manage a team of technicians, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with company policies and quality standards. Promote a culture of accountability and pride in workmanship.
- Obligated. Serve as a hands-on working manager by actively diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy equipment including asphalt pavers, milling &reclaiming machines, loaders, excavators and other fleet equipment. This position requires continued performance of mechanical repair work in addition to leadership and management responsibilities, particularly when maintaining union membership or classification.
- Focused. Ensure regular inspections and preventive maintenance schedules are carried out effectively to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
- Measurement. Manage parts and materials inventory, oversee procurement processes, and maintain appropriate stock levels to support timely repairs and minimize delays.
- Results Matter. Recruit, train, mentor, and develop technicians, fostering growth and continuous learning within the team. Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
- Committed to Serve. Maintain accurate and up-to-date service records, work orders, and maintenance logs to support regulatory compliance and operational transparency.
- Respect and Engage. Work cross-functionally with operations, dispatch, safety, and other teams to prioritize shop and field maintenance needs, support equipment readiness, and ensure fleet availability aligns with operational demands.

Requirements, Education and Experience:
1. High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Diesel Technology, Business Management, or a related field strongly preferred.
2. Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive experience in diesel mechanics and heavy equipment maintenance, including at least 3–5 years in a managerial or senior supervisory role within a shop or fleet maintenance environment.
3. Demonstrated experience overseeing teams, managing workflow, and aligning shop operations with business priorities.
4. Strong hands-on mechanical experience with the ability and willingness to personally perform diagnostics, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on heavy equipment and diesel trucks as needed.
5. Deep knowledge of heavy equipment systems, diagnostics, and repair techniques.
6. Proficiency with diagnostic tools and shop management software.
7. Experience managing maintenance schedules, parts procurement, inventory, and vendor relationships.
8. Strong leadership capabilities with experience managing budgets, labor planning, inventory controls, and performance metrics.
9. Proven ability to mentor teams, lead through change, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
10. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments including operations, safety, procurement, and finance.
11. Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
12. Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, weekends, or respond to operational needs when required.
13. Authorized to work in the U.S.

Travel:
Travel throughout Peckham Industries’ operating footprint is expected based on the needs of the business. Travel may be required to support other shops, facilities, field operations, staffing needs, acquisitions, emergencies, or other operational requirements.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
This position requires the ability to stand, walk and lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs. or more for extended periods. It also involves working in a shop environment with exposure to various weather conditions and loud noises. Candidates must have sufficient physical strength, visual and auditory acuity, and precise hand-eye coordination for handling tools, equipment, and small components during repairs and maintenance tasks. Other manual tasks include bending, stooping, reaching, and climbing onto platforms and ladders, while adhering to safety protocols.
