The Major Gifts Officer will build and deepen relationships with philanthropic supporters whose giving can create meaningful, long-term impact.
This frontline fundraising role will manage a portfolio of current, prospective, and lapsed donors, with a focus on gifts beginning at $5,000.
You will guide donors through the full relationship lifecycle, from qualification and cultivation to solicitation, renewal, and stewardship.
The role combines strategic relationship management, compelling storytelling, thoughtful gift asks, and disciplined moves management.
You will work closely with philanthropy, communications, programs, finance, and prospect research colleagues to develop tailored opportunities and strengthen revenue.
Success will depend on your ability to secure high five-figure and low six-figure commitments while delivering an exceptional donor experience.
This is a fully remote opportunity for a collaborative, mission-driven fundraiser who is motivated by measurable results and meaningful social impact.
- Manage and grow a portfolio of current, prospective, and lapsed donors, beginning at the $5,000 giving level, across the complete donor lifecycle.
- Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, renew, upgrade, and steward supporters using personalized strategies and disciplined moves management.
- Conduct donor meetings, make direct gift requests, and secure high five-figure and low six-figure commitments, including unrestricted, restricted, and multi-year gifts.
- Develop compelling pitches, proposals, reports, grant applications, correspondence, briefings, and stewardship materials tailored to individual donor interests.
- Maintain accurate donor records, opportunities, next actions, stages, and forecasts in Salesforce or a comparable fundraising CRM.
- Use CRM data to support segmentation, portfolio analysis, donor progression, revenue forecasting, and moves-management planning.
- Partner with philanthropy leadership, Individual Giving, prospect research, and other teams to identify and qualify emerging major-gift prospects.
- Review donor data to identify major-gift, family-foundation, donor-advised fund, planned-giving, and leadership-level opportunities.
- Help transition donors into Major Gifts and encourage established supporters to increase their level of investment.
- Identify pipeline gaps, stalled relationships, and emerging opportunities, recommending practical next steps to advance donor engagement and revenue.
- Coordinate programmatic, financial, and impact information with internal teams to create compelling donor opportunities and communications.
- Represent the organization in donor meetings, cultivation events, and other engagement activities while maintaining strong ethical and professional standards.
- Contribute to fundraising operations and process improvements that increase efficiency, strengthen donor experiences, and support broader philanthropy strategy.
- Bring insights from donor conversations and portfolio activity into revenue planning, forecasting, and cross-functional fundraising initiatives.
- Bachelor’s degree and/or at least five years of progressively responsible fundraising experience, preferably involving international or mission-driven issues.
- Demonstrated success managing a major-gift portfolio and identifying, cultivating, soliciting, renewing, and stewarding significant donors.
- Proven ability to close high five-figure gifts and experience closing or substantially contributing to low six-figure gifts.
- Strong understanding of the full donor lifecycle, moves management, portfolio strategy, and donor engagement.
- Strong oral, written, analytical, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to communicate persuasively and authentically with donors.
- Advanced experience using Salesforce or a comparable fundraising CRM, including maintaining accurate records and leveraging data for portfolio management.
- Strong administrative, organizational, and project-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines independently.
- Experience developing donor communications, proposals, grant applications, reports, briefings, and stewardship materials.
- Experience using AI thoughtfully for research, communications, analysis, and workflow improvement while applying sound judgment and maintaining human oversight.
- Excellent attention to detail, curiosity, humility, sound judgment, flexibility, and a collaborative mindset.
- Ability to work effectively within a small or growing fundraising team and contribute across the broader philanthropy revenue function.
- Experience in international development, global health, or another mission-driven organization is preferred.
- Experience with donor-advised funds, family foundations, planned giving, complex gifts, or executive and board-level donor engagement is a plus.
- Willingness to travel domestically, including occasional evening or weekend commitments.
- Fully remote position available anywhere in the United States.
- Medical insurance options with approximately 70–100% employer-paid coverage for employees and dependents.
- Employer-paid dental and vision insurance, plus pre-tax Flexible Spending Accounts.
- 403(b) retirement plan with employer matching contributions of up to 5% of gross annual salary after one year of service.
- 12–13 public holidays plus a floating holiday.
- 120+ hours of PTO available upon hire.
- Three paid volunteer days, Summer Fridays, and additional office closures.
- Employee Assistance Program and access to services including Health Advocate, One Medical, Talkspace, and related support.
- Mission-driven environment focused on creating lasting access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.
- Minimum salary of $85,000 USD for candidates outside major metropolitan areas and $90,000 USD for candidates in major metropolitan areas such as New York, NY or Washington, DC, with compensation determined by experience, qualifications, and geographic location.
- Collaborative culture that values diversity, inclusion, integrity, accountability, innovation, courage, and respect.
