The Director of Band and Music Instructor is responsible for the leadership, administration, and artistic direction of the university’s band program, as well as teaching music courses as assigned. This role includes conducting band rehearsals and performances, overseeing band operations, mentoring student musicians, and contributing to the academic mission of the music department.
Responsibilities
- Lead, conduct, and manage the university’s band program, including marching band, concert band, pep band, and other ensembles as assigned.
- Plan and oversee all aspects of band rehearsals, performances, and appearances at athletic events, university ceremonies, and community events.
- Teach music courses such as applied lessons, music theory, music appreciation, or ensemble performance, as assigned.
- Develop and implement band show concepts, drill designs, and music selections.
- Recruit and retain student musicians through outreach, auditions, and partnerships with high schools and community organizations.
- Supervise and mentor band staff, assistant directors, and student leaders.
- Manage the band program budget, equipment inventory, and uniform maintenance.
- Coordinate travel, logistics, and event planning for band performances and competitions.
- Foster a positive, inclusive environment that supports student success, leadership, and artistic growth.
- Ensure compliance with university policies and safety standards in all band activities.
Education
- Master’s degree in music, music education, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience in band directing and music instruction, preferably at the collegiate or secondary level.
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds.
