Job Description
Job Summary:
The Nurse Practitioner shall be licensed in the State of Mississippi and must practice according to a Board approved protocol which has mutual agreement of and by a Mississippi licensed physician and the approval by the Board of Trustees. The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. The NP works in the clinic setting and the hospital under the direct supervision of an attending physician and reports directly to the Medical Director of Neurosurgery.

- Provide direct patient care including assessment, diagnosis, and formulation of treatment plan.
- Perform physical exams and record patient history including dictation.
- Document exam findings in progress notes along with treatment plan when appropriate.
- Order and supervise diagnostic tests after collaboration with physician.
- Provide appropriate education to both patient and family members.
- Make referrals to appropriate ancillary services.
- Confers with physician(s) concerning assigned patients.
- Keep physician(s) informed, as is appropriate, of needs and problems related to patient care.
- Complies with established standards.
- Order and review lab, radiology and other diagnostic tests.
- Assisting in neurosurgical cases, daily hospital care for Neurosurgery inpatients, and discharge planning on all admitted Neurosurgery patients.
- Provide pre and post procedure care to hospitalized patients.
- Discharge patients: dictate discharge summaries, write RX’s and arrange for follow-up care.
- Write admission orders after collaboration with physician.
- Utilize supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner.
- Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel.
- Maintain patient rights and confidentiality of patient information, and abide by established communications code.
- The Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner must utilize knowledge of growth and development in the care of children (pediatric), adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills to appropriately communicate and interact with the patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills
Master Degree in Nursing with Family Practice or Acute Care focus preferred. RNFA preferred.
ATLS required for first assist in operative cases.
Work Experience:
Previous work experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a clinic and/or hospital setting.
Certification/Licensure-DUE UPON HIRE
- Licensed as an APRN by MS State Board of Nursing.
- Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification required.
