Job Description
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
- Reviews production sheets and menus to determine the type and quantity of food items required.
- Prepares menu items by following simple recipes and production instructions, ensuring proper seasoning and adherence to dietary guidelines.
- Cooks a variety of foods, including vegetables, meats, casseroles, soups, and stews, using equipment such as kettles, ovens, deep fryers, and pressure steamers.
- Participates in food quality assurance by tasting, smelling, and checking food temperatures.
- Assists in setting up and placing food items on resident tray lines and in designated food service areas.
- Supports dish room operations by scraping plates, loading/unloading the dish machine, and sorting silverware.
- Assists with washing pots and other kitchen utensils.
- Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of work areas, equipment, and supplies; reports issues or supply needs to management.
- Logs food temperatures to ensure food safety standards are met.
- Follows established procedures and schedules for cleaning assigned areas.
- Receives and stores frozen goods, ensuring proper inventory management and kitchen readiness.
- Plans cooking schedules to align with designated mealtimes.
- Treats all residents, visitors, and staff with respect, dignity, and privacy at all times.
- Upholds and demonstrates commitment to the CORE values of the Congregation of Divine Providence.
Other Duties:
- Performs additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Proficient in operating kitchen equipment such as ovens, stoves, and commercial dishwashers.
- Knowledge of proper sanitation standards and food storage procedures.
- Maintains a neat appearance and demonstrates strong work habits.
- Capable of clearly explaining situations and procedures to relevant parties.
- Able to speak, read, and understand English fluently.
- Maintains a sincere, positive, and team-oriented attitude.
- Adheres to organizational policies, including safety and health guidelines.
- Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Possesses strong time management and attention to detail.
- Demonstrates flexibility and dedication to job responsibilities.
- Represents the Congregation with professionalism to the public, visitors, applicants, employees, and residents.
- Able to identify and report hazards promptly or take corrective action as directed.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Minimum of three years’ experience as a cook.
- Dietary or food service training preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
- None required.
Working Conditions:
- Must be physically capable of standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 45 pounds, twisting, and continuous arm movement.
- Must adhere to infection control protocols.
- Works with various chemicals, spices, and food products.
- Must tolerate hot, humid, wet conditions, as well as odors and dust.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Must navigate all areas of the facility, including kitchens, storage, and mechanical areas.
- Required to read English, especially for labels related to cleaning and food preparation.
- Must be available for rotating shifts and/or weekend assignments.
