About This Position

The Surgery Attendant contributes to implementing the perioperative nursing plan of care under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Practical Nurse.

Lead Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assists with orientation of new employee Surgical Attendants.
  • Assists with teaching Surgical Attendants new protocols.
  • Assists with creating & implementing new streamlined processes.
  • Assists with ordering supplies.
  • Maintains oxygen supplies by methods such as checking oxygen tanks to ensure they are replenished, mounting regulators and attaching oxygen masks onto new tanks, checking suctions are clean and available on all stretchers, and checking to ensure equipment is functioning and available for use.
  • Acts as resource for setting up and positioning a variety of equipment/accessories within the operating room suites such as operating tables, traction and specialized equipment, video equipment, warming blankets, and tourniquets by methods such as checking the operating slate for scheduled surgeries, identifying written equipment requirements and determining additional accessories needed, obtaining and moving items from equipment bays to designated areas, putting beds together according to surgeon's requirements, and making equipment adjustments when requested.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs safe patient transfer/transport procedures.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the perioperative area.
  • Adheres to principles of aseptic technique.
  • Performs nursing tasks assigned by the nurse to promote perioperative nursing care.
  • Contributes to the efficiency of the department.
  • Maintains and communicates accurate patient appointments according to established procedures, with changes made as appropriate.
  • Admits/Registers patients according to established procedure.
  • Uses the organization’s resources and equipment to enhance communication between ancillary departments, surgical services, and the community.
  • Unpacks and distributes surgical supplies delivered from the stock room.
  • Keeps surgical materials organized and stocked according to par levels.
  • Communicates daily with leadership concerning supply needs or other related issues.

Education:
High school graduate or equivalent required.

Experience:
One year of surgery or materials management preferred. Previous nursing assistant or environmental assistant experience in an acute care setting preferred.

Licensure/Certification:
Basic Life Support (BLS) within three months of hire required.
