About This Position
The School of Theater and Dance at Southern Illinois University Carbondale seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor of Practice, Costume Shop Manager. This is a non-tenure track faculty appointment starting August 12, 2025.
The School of Theater and Dance fosters scholarship, experience, and creativity, offering a blend of academic work, production experience and creative thinking to prepare students for a productive and successful life in Theater. The School combines the advantages of a large research university experience with the excitement of a fully-functioning theater production company. With a faculty of working professionals and scholars, the school awards a BA, BFA, MFA and PhD. The school offers an MFA in Theater, with emphases in Lighting Design, Costume Design, Scenic Design, and Technical Direction, as well as Playwriting and Directing.
The Costume Shop Manger would be a fully engaged artist-manager-teacher collaborating with the professional production staff, primarily by their work in our production program (two musicals, two non-musicals, and an MFA playwright festival), while managing an active costume shop, mentoring a paid student staff, teaching their art and craft in the classroom, and participating in the governance of the School of Theater & Dance.
The target salary offer for this position is $3,750.00 to $5,000.00 monthly, and the full pay range for this position is $33,750.00 to $45,000.00 annually. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.

The Costume Shop Manager will work with the faculty costume designer and other professional staff and faculty to oversee and participate in the construction of costumes for School of Theater & Dance productions. They will maintain inventory, equipment, schedules, calendars, and budgets.
They will work with MFA students in costume design, as well as supervising graduate and undergraduate students working in the Costume Shop. Additional duties include maintenance of inventory, equipment, schedules, calendars, and budgets. The Costume Shop Manager will also assist the costume design faculty in elements of instruction for costume courses and labs, teaching at least one class a year.

Minimum Qualifications:
- MFA in costume design or technology
- Minimum one year of experience in professional live entertainment (i.e., regional theatre, cruise lines, etc.) (Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience)
- Minimum one year of experience in costume shop management or equivalent management experience
- Knowledge of pattern making, cutting, draping, fabric modification, crafts, stitching and altering
- Ability to supervise and mentor multiple people at a time, including work study students
- Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including occasional nights and weekends
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills with students and colleagues Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Exhibits ability to work cooperatively with a diverse population
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two to five years of leadership/supervisory work in a costume shop, specifically with experience in the hands-on fabrication of theatrical costumes, or comparable experience in the fashion industry
