About This Position

Description:

The Graduate Assistant for Student Accessibility Services assists in ensuring access and support for all students with disabilities within the campus community, in support of the mission of the University.

SCOPE:

  • Interacts on a frequent, daily basis with students, and as necessary with faculty and administrators.
  • Work includes occasional evening and weekends as needed for department events, presentations or other University events.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works individually with students with a wide range of disabilities who maybe struggling academically, socially and/or emotionally.
  • Assists in developing compensatory strategies that lead to retention, persistence, and student success.
  • Assists Director in planning, preparation, tracking and delivery of Plan for Success Mentor program for first year students considered at risk.
  • Assists in acquiring instructional materials in alternate format, as needed.
  • Demonstrates the use of assistive technology (AT) to students, and researches appropriate AT solutions to support student access.
  • Assists with process of recruitment of student notetakers as needed.
  • Serves as proctor, reader or scribe for exams administered in Student Accessibility Services.
  • Assists students on disABILITY Awareness Team in development of campus awareness and programs.
  • Inputs and exports of data and reports into Accommodate Database.
  • Represents Student Accessibility Services at University programs and events.
  • Meets regularly with Director and Assistant Director of Student Accessibility Services.
  • Perform other job-related duties, as assigned.

OTHER BENEFITS:

  • Position includes Graduate Tuition Remission for 3 courses (9 credit hours) during the fall and spring semesters and 2 courses (6 credit hours) for the summer semester or a total of 8 courses (24 credits) per year (fees not included). Courses are not covered for the 2nd summer of assistantship. Must be enrolled at Assumption University
  • Cannot be combined with another part-time job at Assumption
  • Does not include room and board
  • No Health Benefits or Retirement Benefits
  • Unpaid Student Vacation Schedule
Requirements:
  • Must be willing to contribute actively to the mission of the University as well as show respect for the Catholic and Assumptionist identity of Assumption University.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Candidates must be accepted into a graduate degree program at Assumption University before being hired as a Graduate Assistant: Student Accessibility Services.
  • Possess extraordinary interpersonal skills in order to provide an empathetic and an individualized approach, and a strong desire to make a difference in the educational experience for Assumption University students with disabilities.
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and maturity in handling sensitive information, student interaction, and community relations.
  • A commitment to student development within the context of a population inclusive of racial, ethnic, cultural, and economic difference.
  • Excellent communication, counseling and organization skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to be flexible in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
